I had the same question and went 7700x because it's better on single-threaded/gaming usage, also a newer architecture and also AM4 is going to have an upgrade path
I bought the bundle and tried to return just the board but they wouldn't let me. Was all or nothing. But they let me exchange the board and memory for different parts and I just paid the difference.

I already have a 12900 system in a driving simulator and it runs HOT! I'm building a system for another room for games and 3-d modeling and I'm tempted to spend the extra money for a 14700 bundle.

13700k vs 14700k they both are great! and the dif is just a gain of 3-5% in speed. If you want the best for your money you can go for the 13700k but honestly for now, if you have the 12900, stay there, get a better AIO Cooler and wait for the upcoming generation. save some money because it will change CPU socket and Motherboard as well.

I have the 14700 and if $$$ is no concern then get the 14700. It runs hotter than the 12900 though, from my understanding. You're going to need a good 360 aio for the 14700. I've read reviewers say their 14700 overheated with a 240 aio
