Taxes and fees are included. This is the normal price, so no reason to rush straight into it. So long as you haven't done it in recent past, take advantage of the free month first. Just make sure to cancel it a few days earlier, as they will renew it at that monthly plan a few days before the end of the trial period. You can cancel that and replace it straight into the $72 annual plan from their dashboard. Just did it last month. Perfect plan for a flip phone.

This is not a new deal. They've had this light plan for ages at this price

I'm only speculating here, but since it's free there's no reason why it would expire.
What you mean by "free"? What is "free"?
1st page says it cost $72.

The SIM is free. Activating it isn't, as you buy a service plan then.

Wrong. There is no activation fee either. SIM is free, activation is free, the only thing you are paying is for the service. In this case, it's $72 for 1 yr of service.

That's what I just said. I never mentioned an activation fee, only the cost of the plan.

The next time you want to rudely tell a stranger that they're wrong when they're not wrong at all, you might want to think it about it first.

I've sorta been tempted to lock in the $72 a year price during my free 30 days to sidestep any increase. How much did they go up on you?

You said "SIM is free, activating isn't."

This is false, as activating IS free.

Semantics, and my quote was taken out of context. AND you quoted me as putting a period, when in fact I put a comma to attach a modifier afterwards. So 2 dishonest things you did to try to make your point. It's all there in black and white, for everyone to see. People like you get purged from my life immediately without hesitation, never to return. You're dismissed; I have no interest in your word games. Go make yourself feel superior to someone else.

It's really sad this argument between two internet strangers about a simple poorly chosen word.

Technically you can't start using the SIM until you buy a plan, thus buying a plan is activating the SIM for usage. So 'activating' the SIM involves payment because of service cost.

Should he have chosen a different word? I guess. Is it that big of a deal? Not even close to what you've turned this into.

SIM doesn't work until I pay money (or transfer number but that's separate issue) so money = activation.

No, because you can activate the SIM (have a number) and not a plan or balance yet.

Thanks. I was just trying to help someone who didn't understand, in the simplest terms possible. Then this third party came screeching outta nowhere. I'm done with it now, but dang. It's like people ae laying in wait to go on the attack.

Edit: Wow, they're still at it.

Is this the best option in the MVNO world if we have a spare iPhone 13 and want to keep it at home 24/7/365? Basically we have no traditional landline, but our oldest child is old enough to be alone if we run to the store for 20 minutes. We aren't ready to get her a full-time cell phone and she has no serious need for one yet, but have been considering something we can leave with her when we run out just in case.

The 1GB data cap is no issue since it would be on Wi-Fi all the time.
I think you have few free options:
Since the iphone is connected to home WiFi all the time you can Use call and messaging apps like telegram, google meet, etc. that ring so your kid can answer. Not sure but there may be even a way to setup facetime with email only w/o phone number.

If you need to have a traditional phone number to call (like from pay phone even) you can create a google voice number and have it ring on the iphone 13 you noted.
You need to give google a backup cell number (like yours) but you can set it in a way that the iphone at home ring (through google voice app) not your backup number.

Hope it helps

Tracfone, esp. the recent deals for around $40, would give you a year of service (some of the deals are for 1500mins/1500texts/1.5GB data total for the year, others were for more $ but had unlimited mins/text and 24GB data). You can buy the deal, transfer to the phone of your choice after activation (provided it's VZW compatible, and you have a Tracfone sim, which you can buy for $2), and it will work anywhere (not just on WiFi).

If you know how to milk the rewards program, you can potentially extend that for another year or two for little to no additional cost, provided you don't use the service a lot.

The main advantage of TF vs. e.g. GV is it will give you service outside of WiFi (e.g. power outage at your home, loss of internet, and no phone...). You can thus also take it with you on e.g. camping or hiking trips as a spare phone (e.g. for the kiddo).

I never heard of any ad blocker apps that can interact with a News app like Google or CNN, or even Safari or Chrome on an iPhone??
Wipr app seem to be able to suppress most of the ads across all iPhone apps - it's all WebKit (Safari)-based underneath on iPhone, after all, and they "passively" block most of the garbage coming to all of the iPhone apps. "Passively" here means that it's no uBlock Origin, of course, which could handle various dynamically loaded JavaScript-based elements that sneak in after the main page is already loaded. But a combo of NextDNS and Wipr does reliably get rid of MOST of the ads on the phone.
