When I initially read the deal title, I totally though they might be targeting a consumer demographic for the tool, so I had to read further.

I like the design but 7cr17 really slows my roll. Is there a way for a consumer to make that harder? Perhaps cryotherapy?
Talk dirty to it or give it a back massage.

Can't see blade length anywhere? That's Important information that determines legality in different US states.
The knife is called Pledge.

Specs on Gerber's site say it's 3.7".

Various blade steels will really only get as hard as they are capable of according to their composition. Since Gerber does an okay heat treatment on the 7Cr17MoV they love to use in their knives, I doubt there is much more that can be done to harden the blade beyond that. 7cr17MoV is what it is. And if you did somehow make it harder, it would likely be brittle and stressed to the point of breaking. Remember that the harder a blade is the less tough it becomes due to brittleness, almost like glass.

8Cr13MoV is about as soft and low quality as I'm willing to go for an EDC folding pocket knife. It's the steel Spyderco makes it's popular Tenacious, Resilience and most of their Byrd budget like out of. Granted, Spyderco does a most excellent heat treatment on 8Cr13MoV to really get a lot out of it.

If you want a better quality knife that is a step or two up from a Gerber in 7Cr17Mov, I would suggest you look at the Ganzo Firebird line of knives they make with D2 semi-stainless tool steel. You can get one for around $25 and Ganzo's D2 has been tested to be in the 62HRC+ range. Ganzo also makes several nice knives in fully stainless 440C in the sub $20 range if you need more corrosion resistance, and both their materials and build quality are significantly better than Gerber's budget knives like the Pledge. The Ontario Rat I or 2 in AUS8 is another knife I'd recommend if you are willing to spend around $30ish dollars. But, chasing hardness and high edge retention above all else isn't the most important thing when choosing what steel you want your knife made out of. You have hardness, edge retention, wear resistance, durability, corrosion resistance, ease of sharpening and cost to consider as well. No blade steel can do it all, so you have to decide what's more important based on the intended use of the knife. This is a pretty good article if you want to learn more about specific blade steels. [knifeinformer.com]

All that said, A slim Gerber like the Pledge in 7Cr17MoV for $10 and change is a deal, IMHO. I like the design, blade shape, axis lock and 3" is a capable blade length without being huge. The Mullet tool thrown in is a nice bonus. All the Gerbers I've owned in 7Cr17Mov have sharpened up well without too much effort, and were well suited to the everyday tasks most of us use a knife for. But it won't hold an edge forever so you'll need to know to sharpen a knife. The $35 Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener [amazon.com] is a great tool to learn to maintain your knives on, if you don't already have some kind of sharpener.

Sorry for rambling, but thanks for the opportunity to geek out over knife steels.

I saw that, but it's listed on a few other sites as having a 3" blade. If it indeed has a 3.7" blade, that would be a plus for me because I have big hands and like larger knives. But I would be careful carrying it in public in any jurisdictions with restrictive knife laws.

The American Knife and Tool Institute [akti.org] is a good source for knife laws by state, county and municipality. Do your research and stay safe.

Hello, knife snob here. It doesn't have the e=mc2xcrTi129power steel, therefore pay $18763.63 for a real pocket knife. Trust me, good investment. You can open many letters and cardboard boxes.

I said the same thing about the trunk on my 2000 Intrepid. I'm short, so I kept an extendable ice scraper in there year round so I could reach stuff that rolled to the front of the trunk without having to climb inside. laugh out loud

Whenever a lifetime warranty requires you to send in the knife, and shipping becomes more expensive than the knife cost, what's the point of even having the warranty... no warranty is worth a **** under such conditions, and they know it, unless it covers all the repair costs...

I bought a Pledge for ~$15 last year and have been carrying it around daily since then. It's a great knife for the price, feels good in the hand, and I like the shape of the blade for non-cutting tasks where I just need to pry something a little bit. I also just think it looks pretty slick.

Only weird thing for me was that the blade opens to the opposite direction of the belt clip than what I'm traditionally used to, so I had to untrain myself from flipping it over when I took it out of my pocket.

I'm 100% going to buy another one for $10 and the little keychain tool is just gravy on top of that.

If you are right handed, right hand tip up carry is what most prefer. You can carry in your right pocket and the back of the closed blade will be against the outside seam of your pants pocket for extra insurance that your blade won't open in your pocket. The clip on the Pledge can be swapped over for similar left hand carry, as well.

Tip down carry isn't the end of the world, you just have to flip it over after you pull the knife. But if you ever carry a knife with a weak detent tip down towards your hand, and it manages to open itself in your pocket, you're in for a real treat the next time you reach into your pocket. I've done it to myself and it really puts you off tip down carry.
