Zipair, a Japanese low-cost airline headquartered at NRT, wholly owned subsidiary of Japan Airlines, via Travelocity have round trip airfares travelling from San Jose CA (SJC) to Narita Tokyo (NRT) for $513 or from San Francisco (SFO) for $569, nonstop. You may earn ZIPAIR points or exchange JAL (Japan Air Lines) points. ZIPAIR has Boeing 787 Dreamliners in their fleet.
You are allowed a personal item that fits under the seat in front of you, weighing up to 15 lbs. And honestly, 15 lbs packs a lot if you leave your laptop at home. There is FREE wifi onboard throughout the entire flight. Some might say it never worked for them but it does, you'll have to scan the QR code on the back of the seat in front of you and then connect. In-flight food may be purchased in advance or onboard, based on availability....costs about $11 for a hot meal.

As others have mentioned, you have to pay for everything: carry ons, checked bags, food, including water.
This is the savings you get from full service airlines. However, often times the fare difference for me is usually a couple hundred of dollars depending on when you're traveling. In some cases, you can save a ton during low seasons with a round trip around $800-$900. But if you factor in the carryon, checked bags, etc. The savings may not be much after all

There are some people who say Tokyo slows down because people travel outside of Tokyo to return home, but many videos on YouTube show it being very busy on Golden Week.
I think these are all 787 Dreamliners - Google search says average age is 9 years.

As others mentioned, it can be cheaper but you do have to pay for everything separately. I saved a few hundred by flying with them last year. They were the only direct flight from San Jose to Tokyo at the time.
I recommend Zipair but unfortunately you do still have to compare prices since it's not always cheaper. I'd fly JAL if the price was similar since Zipair is no frills.
