Do you mean why the concept didn't gain traction?
The specialized notebooks aren't required for what it does and other apps outperform it in OCR.

Can you elaborate on performance? Maybe a link to back up the claim? I am interested what other brands are out there as I used Rocketbook a while back and want to get back to digital note taking (non tablet functionality). TIA!
I've been using these for a year but never use the app/qr functionality. The main advantage (for me) is the spiral-bound notebook has many thin pages and you write on them with special erasable pens. You can erase with the back of the pen or a damp cloth. I use them for my to-do lists, recording measurements on rough schematic drawings, etc. But there's no paper wasted; my chicken scratch is all in one place. Every now and then I go through and erase all the old info and consolidate the rest onto a page or two.

I would like to know too
Have a mini size, executive cover with the ringed inserts, and now this spiral bound with the folio and notecards which was cheaper than even the mini from Amazon at this price.

Can you elaborate a bit more. What's the cost for alternatives.
Technically, yes. But try doing that with the same piece of notebook paper for a year. Or try erasing an entire page of notebook paper with a damp cloth. The rocketbook "paper" is kind of like a wax coated card stock. It feels natural to write on, is thin enough to have 20 pages in a notebook, but is super durable.
