There are many 2k cheap ones from them do not require homebase. In fact, most indoor ones don't need homebase. The outdoor 4k ones usually need homebase. I have a wide range of their 2k/4k cameras for almost two years, no issues at all. My favorite now is S350. Yes it's more expensive than Wyze, but high image quality, local storage, no subscription fee, makes them absolutely reliable and worth it.
Thanks, good to know. I use mine for mostly outside so I'll look into those.

Not all Eufy cameras need homebase. Look for ones that have "Solocam" in the title like this one https://www.amazon.com/eufy-Secur...0856W45VL/
It only supports, 2.4 GHz, I have this camera, while the pan and tilt is a really nice feature. It had hard time connecting and staying connected vs a wyzecam.

Go with Eufy 2k or 4k camera. Day and night difference image quality wise.
Eufy 2K (pan/tilt) and Wyze v3 neck and neck in image quality, in my experience.

Yes I have experienced occasional connectivity issues with Eufy cameras as well.

Mine have been about the same in terms of connectivity. Maybe a few more issues with the Eufy (stops recording events) but I think that's related to the SD card.

Been using these with CamPlus Lite (free subscription) & it's really good (for my needs). Just don't ever update the firmware as they cause more trouble than their worth.

Also highly recommended to put microSD cards in them & set it to continuous recording. That way you can manually see or make your own recordings as there's a 5 min cooldown between events.

Also know that these cams are pixel based. Meaning if one set of images are different from the next set, it'll count as motion & notify you. So beware of shadows, trees moving, etc. Their AI isn't great either, so just know what you're getting into/paying for.

If you only have CamPlus Lite, these original v3's are the last model to work with it. Since v4 came out, they've been pushing a lot sales on v3's most likely getting rid of inventory, so you may want to stock up on some backup v3 cams.

Now I need to look on the wyze website to compare the "garage sale" cost to see which is cheaper... I really want to a nas- NVR setup, and not have to pay somebody subscription fees, but I have no idea how to go about that. I have an old gaming computer from 2012, with an i5 in it, I guess I could convert it into a home assistant and put some large storage to it..

It all depends on your budget and what type of cameras you can use. Wireless, IP Camera, POE IP Camera, etc. Ubiquiti Protect is on the expensive end but makes it super easy. I run Lorex IP Cameras with their NVR and it works good enough (has its own quirks). Blueiris has been long regarded as a great NVR software so if you want to repurpose your desktop you could look into that.
Hi @DraconianMeasures ..

sdaddict gives a quick good overview there ..

my recommendation :

1) Get one good Dahua OEM or Hikvision OEM varifocal IP PoE camera with a 4MP 1/1.8" sensor ( you'll learn more with a good varifocal camera, you can buy cheaper cameras for the other cameras later )
2) Get a small PoE switch
3) Get a good longer patch cat5e/6 cable with copper wires of 23 or 24 AWG
4) setup a test rig ( you can search ipcamtalk for an example )

and start playing around with it ..

Look up the concept of DORI .. key to understanding what you can accomplish
( pixel density and quality matters )

I bought a few Eufy 2k cameras. Definitely agree - better image quality. They don't have time lapse recording though. Reached out to them. They don't plan to implement time lapse. Bummer

Wyze cannot fast forward through recordings. Stay away!

I have 3 of these and realized this really sucks when you want to review what happened.

Wyze Software always tries to upsell you on everything. Even with their premium plan you can't fast forward a recording? :smh:
What exactly do you mean? I have a few Wyze cams with microSD cards and I can rewind or fastforwarded to literally any moment in the past 2 months. I've never paid for the cloud service, so maybe that's where you're saying there's a limitation?

I've seen the ads to upgrade, but I ignore them and have never paid anything more than the price of the cams and the microSD cards. Oh, I also bought some cheap window mounts that are pretty useful.

My neighbor has some Ring cams and pays a subscription, yet she can only see the clips that Ring records, whereas I have access to everything. Also, I think the video quality is nowhere near as good as my Wyze footage.

That's an issue with your router then. Most IoT devices are 2.4ghz and that band usually has stronger signal strength than 5ghz.

If your 2.4ghz channel width is set too high, lots of IoT devices hate this and won't stay connected.

I have a few V3s and never had any issues. Just add a high endurance memory card to them, at least 128gb or larger.

But the V4's did just come out. So if you need WiFi 6 on 2.4ghz then get the newer ones. The older ones use the older 2.4ghz version.

This is the best bang for the buck. I have been trying different kinds of cameras and found that Wyze is doing the best job for its price. It allows recording to an SD card without a subscription and provides motion sensor notifications without requiring payment for a subscription.
Although it has privacy issues, every Chinese camera has them, lol. However, if privacy is a concern, this can be fixed by flashing custom RTSP firmware, allowing you to build your own internal camera server.
The only downside I can think of is may be the resolution. To be honest, you can get a 2K camera for this price, but without paying for a subscription, you can't record, use motion detection, or prevent your video feed from being shared with China. So, what's the point of having a security camera? Don't fall into this trap, man
