I have a 740s with gxm51. People say theres a software upgrade to make the 74sv compatible with gxm51. Anyone have experience with this?

Not at all, I use this on my Hobie pa12 and really like it. Just sent it to my buddy who just ordered it. I think this is the best bang for the buck kayak fish finder. To me a 9" is too big for a kayak, not to mention they drain way more battery.

I've got a 9" garmin with Livescope and am looking to upgrade to a 10 or 12 as soon as I can find one on slickdeals. Smilie

How safe is the transducer.... say you fall overboard and the transducer is on ? Can you hold the transducer with your hand around it in the water while active ? Can you use it as a hand held unit (not mounted) to just scan and point it at whatever under your kayak ? I'm kinda thinking of using one of these side scan sonar from the side of the docks just to see what is down there underwater.

The transducer is completely waterproof and even if there was a short in the wire you would only feel a tickle from how little electricity is used by these units.

So this unit comes with the coastal maps, but not inland lakes. Anyone know how much it costs to add the inland mapping?

Damn wish this was the 73sv, I don't have any interest in the Ocean in a 10.5' kayak

Transducer is just fine. Make one of my fish finders portable back in the day. My transducer floats. Still use it for randome boats, float tube and kayaks

Sidescan does not work that way.

Considering 1 year subscription of navionics mobile app cost $50, the pre-load map in echomap uhd 74sv is worth at least $50. let alone a better transducer than GT52-TM, touch screen and side view.

I use to do this with two 6V sla batteries and a broken tip 11foot steelhead rod and do drivebys around structure and bridge pylons looking for fish. Let's you cover a lot of area and not waste time around areas not holding fish.
