I would buy the five year old a Dock Demon spincaster from Walmart. They can also be had in Spiderman or Barbie variants if you prefer. It's a solid fiberglass rod that is very tough to break. I've accidentally caught a 5lb. turtle on one without issue.

For you, I'd recommend the 7' Vengeance spinning reel combo, or if you want a mini rod like the kiddo then get an Ugly Stik Dock Runner.

Spincasters for little kids.

Spinning reels for maybe 8 years on up, and probably the best reel for throwing on a windy day.

Baitcasters for targeted cast and retrieve fishing.

Conventionals for throwing heavy bait for waiting on a fish.

That's all a generalization, but it's mainly true.

I have way too many fishing rod and reel combos - why do I now want several of these? Slickdeals be danged!

Any of these good for someone starting out? I'm interested in getting into the hobby with my 5 year old or should I go with something else?

These are good prices for a solid brand. Personally, I learned on a spin cast-style reel, as I found them quite bit easier / more forgiving than bait cast. But other folks may disagree.

I'd say it'd fair advice, but personally I would not recommend a spincast reel to an adult. I like them for little kids.

For adults, a spinning reel isn't much harder to figure out than a spincaster, and when something goes wrong (and it will), a spinning rod is simple to sort out. Spincasters are pretty terrible for having to open up.

Seems like something fishy (heh) is going on as a lot of these have terrible reviews.

Graphite fishing poles will always have some bad reviews. Ignorant fishermen don't understand that graphite won't bend past about 90 degrees without snapping even if it is a $250. In fact, more expensive, higher-modulus rods snap easier from abuse. I've broken a rod pulling a snag in an improper manner, but I didn't blame the rod manufacturer. If you want to abuse a rod, get an Ugly Stik, or another rod with a fiberglass tip.

I can confirm through personal experience that the Abu Garcia Black Max reels are a steal at $30 and work better than $150 Shimano Curados did 25 years ago. If you can't cast with a Black Max, it's not the reel that is the problem. The Vengeance rods aren't super premium, but they are fantastic budget setups.

Kind of wild that the jordan lee reels are $5 more than the combos I bought with those reels on them last december...

I use graphite and exceed 90 degrees every time if I fish from a high bridge or pier, and haven't broken one. Graphites are not born equal.

Reels on a couple of Jordan Lee's I bought around Christmas are crunchy. They seem to work fine, but they are not nice to use.

Some folks make it too complicated.
This combo is great for you to start, believe me.
