Be aware that these are the base M1 models with binned 7-core GPUs, only 2 ports and no touchID on the keyboard. I'd personally recommend spending the extra &100 on the 8-core GPU model with 4 ports and touchID (as well as Ethernet on the power cable).

Amazing deal for an incredible screen, dead silent operation, and fast speeds all around for non-gamers (and even some games are starting to appear for MacOS!!).

The only question: If it's worth another $50 to get the (admittedly, orange only) model with touchID (easier logins and authentications), 1/8th more GPU grunt, 2 more USBC ports, and an ethernet port in the power supply (which is surprisingly convenient!)

I'd say it IS worth another $50 for most people: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/imac...22Deals%22

(Just click on M1 8 Core and then the orange color to see the $850 price)

The best 'deal' is probably open box M1 8 GPU-core (touchID) for $800, excellent condition. That would be worth getting…

That's about all I do also. I know it's only the M1 chip, but I put my 2011 next to it and loaded the same content and saw no difference in speed at all. Maybe I will consider the newer M3 when they go on sale. Hope you see a difference! It is a good deal!
My 2008 macbook pro is still kicking 15 years later so are PCs from that era. But you are several MacOS updates behind the current Sonoma. Which means so are your browsers. Ram and HD means nothing if you can only test it on old programs. There is a noticeable difference in ability to load multiple tabs at once, and having the newer WIFI chip sets also helps with that.

People usually aren't competing on SSD space. The 8 gb ram sucks since it isn't easily upgradable but I think it's possible to upgrade on own breaking the warranty.
You can't upgrade the RAM/memory or internal storage on any M1/M3 iMac.

I have both a 8GB and 16GB M1 iMac, and they are great computers. I'm thinking of picking up a third!

8GB Memory - 256GB SSD

Same specs my PC had in 2014. Enjoy your new Mac.
They don't use RAM the same way.

keep the vent in the back clean of dust on all iMacs... I had two in a very clean house just build up dust around the ports big time, eventually the power supplies died...

There's no vent in the back, on these Apple Silicon iMacs.

I literally vomited in my mouth 2 weeks ago at the Pawn America in Fridley MN. I was in line to checkout 2 Blu-ray movies and the older Somalian lady in front of me was checking out. She was buying a 24" iMac with a dual-core Intel Core i5 and there were dents/dings all over the computer. Total came out to ~$760 after tax and the clerk suggested she buy some $80 protection plan....for which she happily obliged. So she spent almost $1000 for a super ancient and dinged up iMac. I kindly walked back to the movies section 14 ft away, threw it back on rack, and walked out.

It's disgusting to watch people that don't know any better get fleeced.

I used to be a quiet bystander to these things and now, (carefully and with tact) I'll try to offer some help when I spot this.

Let me know if you see a difference. I have mid 2011 iMac and saw no difference at all. I returned it. I upgraded my mid 2011 with SSD drive and max 20gb ram. Maybe that was the difference.

It's night and day difference. There is something wrong if you cannot notice the difference. lol

I would take a M1 8GB/256 over a 2020 MacBook Pro16in with 8-core intel/16GB (because I did switch)

I had a 2010 iMac, it's slow as dog and can only go up to... I think Maverick. Yes I know I can hack it to run latest but it's not worth the time because the machine is simply too slow even with SSD. The only thing worth saving is may be the monitor but it's not retina either....

So if you're saying you can't notice your 2011 iMac being much slower... lol I won't even use a last version of the 8-core Intel iMac 27" with 5k resolution because it's just not snappy like M1

M1 is MUCH FASTER for browsing and day to day use.

on the 2011 imac vs this imac discourse: i sadly retired my 24 inch imac for this exact m1 imac when it first came out as i couldnt upgrade the OS in the 2011 imac to the latest OS and so couldnt upgrade some music production software and so was consequently having issues with some music production hardware ... anyway ... I loved the old 24 inch imac pro, was sad to see it go and, to my surprise, equally love this m1 imac, despite the smaller screen. i've had no issues with processor speed or memory but my use cases are fairly narrow and not that intensive.

one note on the no touch ID point: if you wear an apple watch this becomes mostly a moot point as the watch can be the login, at least works well for me in a private setting.
