The original Japanese language audio (with optional English subtitles) is available in the Extras section of each movie. There doesn't seem to be a way to download the extras, so you can only download the English version for offline viewing, which is disappointing.
For now at least, all of those and more are free to watch on HBO max. But love that studio
$5 less than a previous deal

Are these MA?

Quote from ninkei :
Availability on Max is notable, but I believe they were available on netflix for a while as well. Point being, contracts change (right now Max has them through 2025) & for things I value higher than others, I'm more likely to buy outright.

That said, this is one of the better prices for these movies - don't think they're available for $7ea very often.
I suggest Blu-Ray and then rip it. You're no longer at the whim of the service eprovider. That's my plan for the movies I care about.

I too prefer Vudu as Apple is a very closed off eco-system.

I can't access them on my Roku for instance. Even on PC, I h ave to view it through iTunes. iTunes I believe also only give you HD. So the only time I would ever buy from Apple is if the movie is MA so it can port to Vudu and other platforms. Forget it if you're on Android.

Everybody should avoid buying things on Apple if they can get it elsewhere for maximum portability. Otherwise, you're stuck in their eco-system, stuck paying the Apple tax and the longer you continue to use them, the more expensive it gets to make changes.

Just came on to say I wish it had Nausicaa instead. And Castle in the Sky over Howl's, but I'm probably a minority in that. The book was so much better.
The Ghibli bundle #2 has the Nausicaa and the Castle in the Sky. But the remaining movies are Arrietty, Porco Rosso, Wind Rises, and Cat Returns so might as well buy these à la carte.

That's an enjoyable bundle... Haven't watched the Cat Returns, but the Wind Rises is rich. Such a good movie.

You might want to check your facts before you call for a boycott:
- Apple TV is available on Roku through the Apple TV Channel
- There is in fact an Apple TV App available for Windows which will stream in UHD
- Entertainment Platforms from other ecosystem providers such as Google, Amazon and (especially) Microsoft are arguably worse for "portability" than Apple.

Sure, services such as VUDU is probably still the best out there in the way of portability, but Apple TV is nowhere near as bad as you make it out to be, especially if you consider things such as free upgrades to UHD (although VUDU has started doing that, too, for some movies).

You're right, I just tested it right now. Apple TV is available on Roku, but when I logged in it had a dark pattern of trying to give you the illusion of forcing you into their shitty subscription.

I still can't get it on my Android phone. An issue I do not have on Vudu/Fandango.

Either way, why would anyone buy it on a lesser platform with less reach?

Apple is that platform and I'd avoid them like the plague. A lot of Apple stuff is Apple eco-system only. For instance, I never buy books on iBooks. Kindle gives me an app on every platform possible, even Windows and Mac.

PS, Amazon I can get on every platform possible so I'm not even sure why think it's worse.

In the US, HBO Max has the Ghibli rights and not availabe on Netflix. In many other countries (where there is no HBO Max) you can stream these on Netflix.

"Android": Yes, this is one the one major platform where Apple TV does not have an app (and a painful restriction at that), but, you can stream it from the web if you are in a pinch.

"Buy on platform with less reach": Some people prioritize things like getting consistent UHD upgrades when they become available. There is no "perfect" service out there, so you pick the one which fits your requirements the best.

"Why I included Amazon": This was in reference to your initial argument of not being able to get UHD on Windows with Apple TV -- Amazon will only stream at 1080p on Windows while Apple will stream 4k with their App. But, yes, other than that, Amazon does have a broad reach.

Anyway, I probably should have left out the that last bullet about Google, Microsoft, and Amazon. That was more subjective, while the first two points were made to correct your comments, not to start a debate about which service was better (which I fear it has). As I alluded to earlier, no single streaming service does everything right, and a consumer should be able to objectively choose which fits them the best.

I sort of disagree with your last statement there. I think a consumer should take into account past history and the direction the company is heading in as well. If we as consumer is more aware of it and choose accordingly, so will the companies follow.

Apple unfortunately is a hard core walled garden and has no intent on expanding unless they have to. That's why, I'd rather stick with Vudu/Fandango or even Amazon. Yes, Apple do upgrades to UHD, and that's a nice benefit in the rare instances they do.

I avoid Apple like the plague, as they just aren't good for competition these days. The exception is the upgrade to UHD as well as working with Movies Anywhere, and that I have a $50 gift card from almost a decade ago I'm looking to spend.

Even just as an example, in order to purchase this deal (not that I would as it doesn't port to anywhere) you have to login into iTunes. I literally have to keep a virtual machine with iTunes installed to do it.

Thanks, Monk! I've just bought the set and looking at this in the TV+ app of my LG. I'm pretty tech savvy but impossible to find the Japanese Audio. Do you have any idea how to get it? Otherwise, I'll ask for a refund. Thanks!

So, it is right there in the Extras. Once you start playing the English audio version, you should see an Extras button within the TV+ app. Click on that (I'm not sure what the LG interface looks like, so I don't know what clicking on Extras requires you to do) and one of the options will be the original Japanese audio. Unfortunately, Extras aren't downloadable. Meaning you have to listen to the Japanese audio version while online. Ultimately, I asked for a refund from Apple and I received it.
