I left mine on the charger and about a year ago it stopped charging. I plugged a USB-C cable directly into the back and it worked fine up until a couple weeks ago when it died.
I've been unable to revive it and all signs point to the battery being toast and not working without a battery.

The same thing happened to mine. I contacted Sonos, they had me send it in and they shipped me a replacement.

Yes, mine was out of warranty. Sonos is really good with that. Last year I had a play 5 that stopped connecting and they replaced it with the five since the okay 5 was no longer being made. That one was out of warranty as well.

Yeah that is a known problem with this speaker. I recently used this on a trip and the battery basically died in an hour. Returned it to Costco the other day, no thanks, can't spend money like this on a defective product. But I paid much more than this deal, maybe if I spent this much I'd take the chance.
The price is good and the charger with it seems like a worthy purchase for anyone on the fence. Too bad it's Sam's club only or I would buy a third, maybe even a fourth at this price.
Consider buying two for stereo pairing. It makes the quality of AirPlay exponentially better. I move my pair around the house as needed, mostly bathroom and garage, and they have made me less inclined to buy dedicated speakers for other spaces, perhaps saving me money along the way
