No, they'll just file a police report about the car being stolen and the next person who rents it will go to jail.

Rented a Polestar 2 from them when moving and didn't have any issues with the vehicle itself. Charged it by a Whole Foods while shopping. That said, as an EV owner, I can see why it's unappealing as a rental vehicle. Most of the time, people want to pick up their car and do a lot of driving in the limited time they're traveling / on vacation. Plus, the primary appeal of EVs, imo, is when you have a home charger.

If you got AAA you can rent a Tesla for 7 days for $254 all in. Which is cheaper than what it comes out to most times for 3 days without AAA it was around 285/week
Is the rental through Hertz?

EV manufacturers are shooting themselves in the foot offering free charging for a year or whatever. It may be a selling point over other EV competitors but it disincentivizes home charging and encourages overloading public charging. This creates very vocal and dissatisfied customers and hurts the industry as a whole. They need to get together and ban that incentive.
I disagree, the 1 year of free charging to me sounds like a "peace of mind" inclusion to get over range anxiety because anyone looking for an EV at this stage probably views home charging as an advantage - you can't rely on highly inconvenient and unreliable public charging in most areas right now unless you have a lot of time on your hands or there's a public charger in walking distance of your home/work/somewhere else you spend a lot of time.

Not hating EVs, I realllly want an Ioniq5, but have had to settle for a RAV4 Prime given that the state I live in has poor charging infrastructure and the terrain is high-drain hilly.

They gave me an EV instead of a gas powered vehicle the last time I rented a car. They had no gas powered cars available. The car only had 20% charge when I picked it up.

I went to a free charging station first. Seemed like it was taking too long. Went to a paid one and there was a line. Went back to the free one. Realized it was going to take until 4am to get around half charged. Went back to the paid one and waited in the line.

I was there until 1am to get it charged to 70%. Filed a BBB complaint and got refunded for the rental. Really turned me off to EV's.
Damn. That sucks. You'd think they'd have it fully charged considering how long these vehicles take to charge. It can ruin your plans.

I have only seen tesla at hertz. Do they have any other ev brands. I test drove the rivian recently and I would love to get that as a rental.

If you get a car that's charged a good amount this is a fun way to get an EV. I drive and EV and love it, but I think it's safe to say the current infrastructure isn't there for the rental market to be EVs yet

You have to bring the car back with charge. It's totally not worth using an EV as a rental.

Car rental agencies were coerced by you know who to take on a big percentage of EV's. Every time I rent a car, the counter folks grumble about the EV's and the first thing they hear from customers is..do not give me an EV. I am not against the EV concept, but for me, the last thing I want is to be in a new city and spending time looknig and mapping out charging stations and waiting for the actual full charges,

There is a reason Hertz put up 20,000 EVs for sale couple months ago and opted to replace them with gas cars instead
Meh, Hertz executed a half-thought through plan. EVs could be fine…but they need to actually give you charged cars and manage their fleet properly…which they famously have not done.

Tesla really dropped the ball in LA. The extremely high adoption rate of Teslas in CA(tax credits, etc) has massively outpaced their charging station rollout. Out in the east coast, most chargers have like one other car at them, almost always under 50% used.

They had Polestar 2s, not sure if they still have. Nicer interiors than the Tesla and a bit quieter. Stands out as well.

That explains why hertz's stock is declining so fast…

I personally drive an electric, so I thought I'd support the continued adoptance.

BUT in my experience all the complaints on here are true. Vehicles are never more that a quarter charged. You'll spend your first few hours hunting down available chargers, downloading apps, waiting to charge, waiting as you charge. Last time I asked the rental attendant to point out the charge state and they pointed out the regen indicator. Neither of us knew since the gauges on electrics aren't standardized, but I figured it out half an hour later when the low battery indicator came on. So it's not really a free day, it's more a spend a day of unpaid labor doing what you had expected the rental agency to already have done.

How does Hertz charge for EV charging?
The Hertz charging policy now lets you Skip the Recharge. You can return your EV at any charge level and we'll recharge it for $35—or just $25 for Gold Plus Rewards Members. Or, return it at the same level as pick-up and pay $0.
