The Hertz charging policy now lets you Skip the Recharge. You can return your EV at any charge level and we'll recharge it for $35—or just $25 for Gold Plus Rewards Members. Or, return it at the same level as pick-up and pay $0.
BUT in my experience all the complaints on here are true. Vehicles are never more that a quarter charged. You'll spend your first few hours hunting down available chargers, downloading apps, waiting to charge, waiting as you charge. Last time I asked the rental attendant to point out the charge state and they pointed out the regen indicator. Neither of us knew since the gauges on electrics aren't standardized, but I figured it out half an hour later when the low battery indicator came on. So it's not really a free day, it's more a spend a day of unpaid labor doing what you had expected the rental agency to already have done.
The problem is that EVs are not currently rental friendly nor do they fit in well with the high turnaround car rental model. Most busy car rental locations have to turn around a returned car often within an hour. Some barely get serviced before being turned over to the next renter.
They receive the car, inspect it, clean it, and check it's road readiness in a matter of minutes. Low on fuel, no problem, just refill it with reserve or On-site gas or drive it out to the nearest fleet refueling location.
With EVs and especially non-Teslas, most rental locations aren't even near a fast charging station nor do they have a bank of them on site. You'd think they would have outfitted every hertz location with a fast charging station but those are expensive and take up space. Furthermore, it requires training for the employees which clearly doesn't happen. So you end up with EVs returned with less than half a charge getting turned around to the next renter without a recharge.
For this to support the rental model, hertz needs an EV where the internal battery can simply be swapped out in 15 min or less for a fully charged battery while they recharge or send the uncharged battery off to a charging service.
You're late to the party …. Hybrid is the Chicken Dinner.
I wouldn't hesitate to rent Teslas but charging other EV's can get wonky. I've had issues with multiple CCS chargers with one of them refusing to unlock from the car while I was in a hurry. The phone support person couldn't do much and it took a while before the charger finally decided to unlock and release the car.

I can't imagine going on a road trip with 3 kids and stopping 3-4 times for 30 - 45 minutes to charge.

I find it incredible that rental drivers find issue with EVs and not the rental companies for giving them a car with less than a "full tank".
There's also a LOT to be said for them not educating their customers on EV use, what's "normal", what is worse and better vs ICE cars, etc. |How to route based on charger availability, how the efficiency works based on climate, etc.
Absolutely astounded that people would believe corporate chatter over actual information and knowledge. Although I guess that's the new norm: rumors and "social media degree" misinformation.
EVs are not for everyone, but at least understand what you're talking about before making public announcements. I'm not going to yell about an ICE truck that couldn't haul my load far enough because I decided to fill the fuel tank with peanut oil and corn nuts and never ask about how diesel vs. gas works..... it's always so odd having these conversations.
