That's for a 2022 Model Standard iPad [amazon.com], not the latest iPad Air which is $500 at the moment on Amazon [amazon.com].

This post is for one sold Direct from Best Buy as well, not eBay.
I would only vouch for the 64GB model to people who are positive they won't need the storage, but it can disappear fast these days. iPadOS takes up 10+GB alone. Another big offender would be an iCloud Photos album with years of photos/videos in it (mine is 20GB.) Some popular apps will eat up gigabytes in cache.

But, if you're the type of user who just wants a side device primarily for common internet apps, and don't often take up much space with apps/photos/music/games on their other mobile devices, then sure.

I agree 256GB is probably far too much for most people. They did this on purpose -- there's no 128GB option because they want you to notice the 128GB iPad Pro that only costs $50 more than a 256GB iPad Air, and what's another $50 when you're already spending hundreds?
$400 for a 64gb tablet is not a good deal.

Dauther will be a freshman in college next year. Picked this up so she can take notes on it next year.

As someone who uses this model Air daily, 64GB is FINE. If you're worried about running out of space for media, buy a small USB-C thumb drive. I fly for work so this thing is a godsend as I can load it up with movies and tv shows. I keep most on a thumb drive so when the plane hits 20k feet I just pop the drive in, open VLC and enjoy the show. There are plenty of use cases where higher capacity would be a necessity but I urge folks to ask themselves what they're really going to be using their iPad for and not overspend on capacity they'll never really use out of FOMO.

Yes, especially if you go Open Box and pick one up for 350. At that price it's a no brainer for most people as it's much more powerful than the base 10th gen iPad at the same price but not stupid overpowered and overpriced like the Pro line.
The M1 chip and 8GB of RAM guarantee you'll get at least 5 years of good use before you start to notice any kind of slowdown or sluggishness. Pick up a good 3rd party Pen as well (the Penoval AX Pro 2 is regularly 30 bucks on Amazon and is functionally identical to the way overpriced Apple Pencil) and you'll be surprised how often you use this thing.

That's the shitty base iPad, not the M1 Air.

If just used as a streaming media consumption device it's passable but if you want to do anything more or store anything on it 64 GB is unacceptable. If a 128 GB base version of this existed I think the majority would prefer this even over the base Pro. There's a reason this skips having a version in that size because it doesn't make logical sense to 4x the base to the next available size.

Thanks! Scored one for my kid. We have a 16 hours flight and his old iPad is aging badly. Great deal for a M1 machine

Yeah, any USB-C drive will work. My favorite is one from Sandisk that is the side of a postage stamp but is USB-C on one side and USB-A on the other. Makes moving files around between my old and new computers simple.

Can someone please explain to me how 64GB is so limiting? I bought this almost a year ago or so and I honestly cannot find how I am going to fill up the remaining 35GB on my 64GB ipad. I even have two games and one of them is huge (Civilization 6) and Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. I bought these to play on the plane on a trip to India. Anyway, what is your use case for needing 256GB? I think I use my iPad M1 like 90% of other people...just your basic apps...Internet, Email, eBay, and then all the various streaming services. The only thing I can think of is if you want to take a whole Netflix or Amazon Prime season with you to watch on the plane or cruise where internet may not be available. Those can take up to 16GB per season I believe. Anyway, I just don't get it. I guess if you are needing to do real work..photo editing...video editing then sure...but honestly I feel for a whole bunch of everyday users...64GB is plenty. And M1 is blazingly fast. If you don't like Pink...so be it...but otherwise, IMHO 64GB is plenty...and the newer iPads are not going to be game changers by any means. I wish I didn't already have one...this is would in instant purchase for me.

You are a VERY casual user.

64gb is barely enough for 2-3 movie rips. If you use your device to record lectures or videos, then expect to be out of storage fast and its an enormous PITA.
