I recommend Porkbun (yes, that's an actual registrar). I've bought a couple of domains from them and have been very satisfied with their service.
This coupon code has been active for years --- but good post for those whom are not aware
From firsthand experience name cheap is an awesome domain registrar.

Never used them for hosting anything, can't imagine why a hosting company would be responsible for backups.

You do not say how much it will cost to renew a com TLD or did I miss seeing that? They do not make it obvious but I think renewal is about $14 a year after the first year. That is not bad but people should know before proceeding.

Many others are about that price. I had some domain names in Google but they have sold domain name registration to Squarespace. I think Squarespace charges $12 to renew a com TLD. There are very many other possible registrars. I have some registered using Cloudflare and some registered using Hover. I have some registered with another registrar that I will not mention here.

From firsthand experience name cheap didn't even activate the private settings that were purchased at checkout. Notice 2 days later that all my info is public after I started receiving 10 calls a day from India to "assist" me in web design and various other services for my .com. It has been months now and still daily I get calls from India offering web design services. My business phone number now is a junk number since I get nothing but spam calls on it.

btw - their email services are horrible too. Just purchased it and took over 1 hour to set up. And that didn't even happen correctly, I can send emails but cannot receive them.

From firsthand experience, Namecheap will throw away your live, production data and settings, fail to have any redundant failover systems, fail to keep any backups, fail to notify you when it happens, and fail to provide any remedy whatsoever.

They will fail at the one thing they're supposed to do for you and fail to provide you any recourse or relief.

Worst name in the business. Their services are garbage even if they'd pay you to use them.

Choose any other registrar/host.

Caveat emptor.

Pretty sure your first mistake is trying to do a one stop shop.

As convenient as it sounds, you immediately get labeled a sucker.

It's like any other bundled services, whether it be telecom or insurance, where wolves in the same den have a better chance at finding sheep.

Beyond that, though: Why no on-site backups? How were you managing versioning?

That's somewhat on you for not doing research on how name registration works.

It's very much like having multiple phone books loosely connected.

Just because you're marked private in one, doesn't mean it always transcribes accurately.

Not saying it should be this way, but there's been no effort to change it in roughly 40 years.

Newbie here and I could use some expert advice. I am maintaining a very simple Wordpress website for informational only and would like a budget yet secure website. What should I do? Currently I'm with ionos (1and1) and they charge a lot per year (~$150 including tax/fees). TIA.

Edit: corrected total cost

$90 a year is ridiculously cheap. Are you trolling?

If not, the best I can suggest is figure out how much traffic you're generating and calculate whether self-hosting is viable.
