I was researching this car seat but found out that the NHTSA is looking into several instances where the seat separated from the base in an accident. No recall but I'm crossing this off my list.

I was looking into that as well, but as far as I found I think that's the older model? Not for the extend

I think you're right. I wonder what is different between the two though. I'm a little hesitant if the seat/base mechanism is the same because thats where the failure was happening.

Yeah, l couldn't find it either. I ended up snagging one, the thought is from my pov is that seems like a known issue and it sounds like theyre mitigating the problem by sending the new version so should be fine.
