Then followed all of the chat room roleplays, the fanfics (anyone remember daigkusei no ranma?), the bootleg wall scrolls, the discussions on rec.arts.anime.misc, etc. this show was my jam for at least three years. It dominated mid-90s cosplay, and probably filled a good 20% of animerica's ad pages. It made sense as this was Viz' flagship show.
You had your fandoms with who was the best fighter, which love triangle had the best plot development (or square...or pentagon?)...and of course, who was the hottest. The snes game was pretty good...the PS1 game was like a badly-handling version of Tekken.
This show also kicked off many a sub-vs-dub debate, because not only was the show expensive, but Viz also released the subs at later time than the dubs...and also charges $5 more for it. So it went from a "which is better?" debate to a "is it worth it?" debate.
However, if you're a post-2006 anime watcher, I recommend catching a few episodes to see if it's your thing. I can't really imagine anyone younger than 35 who could get into it. It's one of those shows that's either watched by old-heads or studied for academic purposes for some undergrad-level anthropology class, lol.
However!!! Whenever I meet a ranma fan, I know that he/she and I can totally jam it out...it's like a secret handshake for all of the geriatric millennials anime fans. Give a holler if you grew up with this show.

This brings me back to the late 90's! The VHS tapes, the debates on whether Ranma should marry Shampoo. Was Shampoo the best cook in China?
Another group that should give Ranma a try are people who weren't watching anime until Toonami in the early 2000s and liked Inuyasha. They were created by the same manga artist.

Ah, I got into many, many of these debates as a middle-schooler. This could go on forever, but to be brutally honest, my masochistic side would choose Kodachi. Shes rich, super loyal, athletic, doesnt have other potential suitors, and wouldnt choose me because of some random promise or bet from my parents. Akane and she have the same cooking ability...both liable to poison me. Ukyou would be the logical choice: she can cook, fight, lives on her own, runs her own business, etc. I wouldnt call her a Mary-Sue, but she does manage to avoid alot of drama. Akane has every guy in existance simping for her. Shampoo definitely has the best food. The other tendou sisters were too one-dimensional to figure out.
The dub is pretty good but I gotta admit I like the sub better. I bought this cus it's so cheap and great to put on in the background, but luckily the sub is also (officially) on YouTube for free.

Orange Road had the best opening and closing themes, hands down. Kanako Wada, man. [sigh] Her voice still gets me. I liked UY's "Rock the Planet" opening, but they were a little poppy for me.
