This is a great deal for the $. I loved the hell out of this show back in jr high. The tapes were absurdly expensive and you had to wait a month for each one.

Then followed all of the chat room roleplays, the fanfics (anyone remember daigkusei no ranma?), the bootleg wall scrolls, the discussions on rec.arts.anime.misc, etc. this show was my jam for at least three years. It dominated mid-90s cosplay, and probably filled a good 20% of animerica's ad pages. It made sense as this was Viz' flagship show.

You had your fandoms with who was the best fighter, which love triangle had the best plot development (or square...or pentagon?)...and of course, who was the hottest. The snes game was pretty good...the PS1 game was like a badly-handling version of Tekken.

This show also kicked off many a sub-vs-dub debate, because not only was the show expensive, but Viz also released the subs at later time than the dubs...and also charges $5 more for it. So it went from a "which is better?" debate to a "is it worth it?" debate.

However, if you're a post-2006 anime watcher, I recommend catching a few episodes to see if it's your thing. I can't really imagine anyone younger than 35 who could get into it. It's one of those shows that's either watched by old-heads or studied for academic purposes for some undergrad-level anthropology class, lol.

However!!! Whenever I meet a ranma fan, I know that he/she and I can totally jam it out...it's like a secret handshake for all of the geriatric millennials anime fans. Give a holler if you grew up with this show.
This was a favorite of mine when I was in high school, I've just recently started watching it with my family as the 12 year old is really in to anime. If it was on some other service I would have bought it but I'm really not up for making another account. But it is a wonderful series.
Good Anime but it's better to donate to the Japanese animators (by looking up their websites online) who only make pennies unfortunately, than paying for a temporary license to watch.

The license can be revoked anytime and there is nothing you can do, since you agreed to their terms upon purchase. Like we saw before with Amazon, Funimation, and recently Sony...

Yappa paa yappa paa don't know what to do My heart is not a game - it's mah-jongg to you. Yappa paa yappa paa feel like such a shrew Who needs boys? Don't you dare - Make me wild like you.

This brings me back to the late 90's! The VHS tapes, the debates on whether Ranma should marry Shampoo. Was Shampoo the best cook in China?

Love this series and the dub was great until they switched the male Ranma voice actor in season 5. Really made it rough to watch the rest of the series after that but still one of the best old school animes ever

Gonna relish the nostalgia one more time before this thread eventually dies Frown

This is like one of my favorite cozy old animes to watch in the background. Just be aware new viewers that there's not really any character development after the first season. The cast doesn't change much and a lot of the episodes are self contained. Still cozy to watch 😄
Each new season would bring new (or reinvent) villains You got the dirty old man Happosai in season 2 (like bowser, the worst nightmare in some seasons, and your ally in others), Ukyou at the start of season 3, then you eventually got the new principal in season 4, Gosankugi later, then Pantyhose Tarou (the names were a great part of this show), the big ghost cat, Ryu and eventually...Ranma's mom (probably Ranma's biggest fear...even more than cats). Most of them only get 2-3 episodes, and then disappear, only to make a cameo in an OVA.

So they're selling the dub and sub versions separately, just like back in the VHS days when we got two episodes per $25 tape?
$30 for dub, $35 for sub...in 1995 dollars. I Cant believe theyre STILL pulling this shit in 2024!!

Holla!
Hi! Whats your favorite character?
Quote from bluepanda :
My friend got me into this around '95. I remember wishing I was rich so I could buy all of the VHS tapes - the few that I got were $30 each (which is about $60 in todays money). Amazing that we can now get the entire series for $35.
This is so much anime for the money...only nyaa would be cheaper (Free) I bootlegged the VHS tapes and then sometime in college, my high school friend gave me DVDs for six of the seasons.

Quote from teetee1 :
Still remember me in the 6th grade would spent the whole afternoon, after the half day of school on Saturdays, sitting at the corner of the local comic bookstore reading this manga every week. That was probably the happiest time of my life.
Youre QFT. My comic book store where I would read all of the Viz mangas (Ranma, Urusei Yatsura), some stuff from Mixx (like Parasyte...such a great anime that came out DECADES later, lol) and the OG Sailor moon, was one of the best times of my life. There is no analogue for Gen Z, and I dont say that due to nostalgia or some vehement distaste for anything new...you literally dont have the culture of "waiting" for stuff anymore...
Quote from Collectordragon :
I grew up with this show as well! I prefer subs but I remember the dub of this show was pretty good.

Another group that should give Ranma a try are people who weren't watching anime until Toonami in the early 2000s and liked Inuyasha. They were created by the same manga artist.
Ranma got the most attention when fansubbing was still nascent, but I personally enjoyed Urusei Yatsura more, because it leaned more into its unhinged comedy format, but also had random just SAD episodes to show that Ataru and Lum's relationship wasnt just a one way love-duo-decagon. It also had city-pop OP/ED songs that SLAPPED. UY and Orange Road had the absolute best OSTs of the 80s.

Take your troubles, and throw them to CHINA! (Anyone else do a take when they read those lyrics?)

Ah, I got into many, many of these debates as a middle-schooler. This could go on forever, but to be brutally honest, my masochistic side would choose Kodachi. Shes rich, super loyal, athletic, doesnt have other potential suitors, and wouldnt choose me because of some random promise or bet from my parents. Akane and she have the same cooking ability...both liable to poison me. Ukyou would be the logical choice: she can cook, fight, lives on her own, runs her own business, etc. I wouldnt call her a Mary-Sue, but she does manage to avoid alot of drama. Akane has every guy in existance simping for her. Shampoo definitely has the best food. The other tendou sisters were too one-dimensional to figure out.

Sarah Strange stopped doing the dubbed voice for male-type Ranma in season 4 ("Outta Control") Watching the voice change at the same time as the new principal came on was a trip for me when I was in 10th grade!

The dub is pretty good but I gotta admit I like the sub better. I bought this cus it's so cheap and great to put on in the background, but luckily the sub is also (officially) on YouTube for free.

It happened to Amazon?

I still have a fair amount of anime on laserdisc. Original, not US releases.

Ranma, Orange Road, Maison Ikkoku were the biggies when fansubbing was a new thing (with a side of Nadia and Patlabor). It's funny, but William Chow, the guy behind Arctic Anime, the notorious "do it live in one take" subbing group, has a channel on YouTube.

Orange Road had the best opening and closing themes, hands down. Kanako Wada, man. [sigh] Her voice still gets me. I liked UY's "Rock the Planet" opening, but they were a little poppy for me.
