If you have hardwired alarms, it's best to have the same model for all, otherwise you can get unexplained alarms going off.

Vacuum out your alarms every 6 months (or more often if you have a lot of dust or spiders). Debris building up inside them can cause them to fail or alarms to go off inexplicably. If you're remodeling or doing something that will create a lot of dust, remove the alarm temporarily.

Ionization alarms are the ones that cause a lot of nuisance alarms (the ionization only alarms are the ones that tend to be dirt-cheap). Some have started recommending photoelectric only (or mostly photoelectric only and maybe one combined photoelectric/ionization). Keep ionization alarms out of areas near the kitchen and bathrooms (moisture from bathrooms can set the alarm off).

Buying CO monitors separate from fire alarms means that if one alarm mechanism goes bad, you don't have to replace the whole thing. Unfortunately, some states now require them to be combined - but if you own your own house, you can do what you want (unless you give an inspector some reason to require you meet the regulation, like remodeling).

Your comment cannot be blank.

The 10 year smoke alarms will not last 10 years. I bought a bunch for a new house and had to replace the majority within 3 years.
On the flip side of that, we bought all new ten- year alarms just about six years ago, and they're all doing fine.
These have a manufacturer's warranty of 10-years.

While changing 9v batteries is often the pits, it is quite easy to do in these units.

when i read your comment i felt that for some reason using rechargeables is wrong. so i googled it:

Most alarm manufacturers like First Alert recommend against using rechargeable batteries to power your alarm. Rechargeable batteries lose charge faster and have a shorter runtime than standard batteries. The NFPA requires a standard amount of backup time that rechargeable batteries don't offer.

That's good to know. I wonder if that's applicable to all rechargeables, or just NiCd/NiMh types which are more common and usually rated at lesser voltage. In any event, the lithium ones I've put in are not lasting any less than alkalines.

Not necessarily applies to all, mine all including the ones with CO lasted 10+ years. I replaced Smoke+CO ones exactly after 10 year 3 months with the 2-pack from Costco. All others are still going good.

Highly disappointed with first alert CO & smoke detector. They have two AA instead of 9V and my hardwire ones run out in 5 months instead of 18-22 months on previous contractor grade.
Did you have any power outages during the 5 month using the AA battery ones?

The hardwired options are ionization sensors. I want photoelectric for less false alarms
Not just resistant to false alarms - photoelectric are more sensitive to smoldering fires, whereas ionization sensors are more sensitive to high flame fires. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrOLxh8GuCU Not a bad idea to have both in the house, or to get ones that have dual sensor.

Mine died after 7-8 years. I guess it's just better to buy and new one? Looking for Co+smoke deals.

So the hardwire interconnect wiring is something that would have already existed in you're home?

I received one in a plain brown that had been opened and looked like old stock or a returned item. The unit was dusty and unclean. Amazon claims that this item can not be returned. Did anyone else receive an item that was not in a retail package? I expect refurbished items to be in a plain box, never a new item.

I have Kidde 10 years and they're still going strong 7 years in. If you're having failures after 3 years, you either received a bad batch or are setting the thing off frequently enough to prematurely drain the battery.

I also have some cheap Chinese Lecoolife battery detectors that I added for redundancy. And they are also working fine. But, they tend to be hyper-sensitive. So, I wouldn't recommend adding them anywhere near a kitchen.

Even if you have working, wired, battery backed smoke detectors, there's no harm - especially at $14, in adding a ten year battery backed smoke detector for redundancy just-in-case your existing one fails.
