And yet Briggs & Riley have a real lifetime warranty, better construction, and while being expensive still cost less. But brand image is everything to many people. I'm sure their packs are well built though. They've been around long enough to build that brand image for a reason.

Never heard of Briggs & Riley. But I can tell you this, I've taken my Tumi bags to a Tumi store in Bangkokk or Ho Chi Minh City, I can get it personalized, add accessories, and repaired. Tumi is every where internationally.

Tumi is a popular luxury item; especially in Asia. It is like wearing a Rolex or Persols sunglasses, many people just know you have a $500 bag or $1200 carry-on. Even the airport/airline staff treat you differently.

I bought into the hype and I have to say, after a few years, their stuff is worth it. But you also put a big mark on you with pick-pockets and brazen thieves abroad.
Airport staff treat you differently if they see a higher end backpack? They smile more and say please and thank you?

B&R will repair your bag at any time even if the airport causes damage, even if you are the third owner and bought it off fleabay. True anytime, anywhere, for any reason, lifetime warranty. Their products also can easily be personalized on their leather tags, and they will do it for free even if you didn't order it that way.

Your words in bold suggest B&R are not used worldwide. Everything I've heard has suggested Tumi is not what it used to be. I'm sure it's a nice product though. Not trying to put it down. How do I bold that last part, oh well.

Would rather just get a North Face, much more comfortable and also a good warranty. I'm not in a conservative profession where looks matter though, if you are then I guess it's worth it.

I've got this backpack and it's probably six years old. She is very little aware and has held up great.
To be fair, very few six year olds are.

I'll take B+R any day over Tumi for luggage. However, for travel laptop backpacks the Everki Onyx is where it's at. Still expensive (though way less than Tumi), lifetime warranty, and better layout. Handles my laptop, tablet, portable screen, plus 10 lbs of cords, batteries and other crap with ease.

Okay, I like slightly higher-end stuff and I can afford it, but I would never pay $400+ for a backpack. Like, what? I guarantee you you can get the same functionality and durability from something that costs half as much, a fourth as much, or less.

People who buy this are just trying to seem wealthy. Which is just ironic, because the actual 1% never walk around looking like living billboards for Canada Goose, Louis Vuitton, Tumi, etc. It's just sad wannabe/lemming behavior.

So you don't drive a vehicle? don't go out to eat? don't make your own clothes ? everything you have is a luxury to someone else

I have two other Tumi Alpha Bravo backpacks - one small, on med. Many years old now, still look brand new. Bought one at the outlet, the other at a Nord. Anniv. sale. Love them both. There is no other brand of men's professional-style backpack that compares for style and build-quality. I seem to recall seeing them for less at the outlet recently if you are looking for smaller styles. I would pass on the leather ones. They are heavy and wear quickly. The nylon ones will look new for years if cared for.

BTW items made specifically for Tumi's outlet don't have the leather area for initials. That's how you can tell if it's "real" Tumi or just branded Tumi. If you buy a product that has the leather area you can take it to any Tumi retail store to have your initials stamped on it. It doesn't matter where you bought it or how much you paid. Also the leather is just glued on. You can get blanks at the Tumi store to if you ever hand it down or sell it.
I got one. I think it has a design flaw in that it can't sit upright. The tilting forward is freaking annoying especially with laptop in it and the shit falls to the floor when placed on a chair or table. Mine was a gift as I would never pay big dolla for somethang like this.
