I have 4 bike version of this too. It works so well I got rid of my hitch bike carrier. I might get this hoping it's small enough to just keep in truck at all times. I also use mine while hauling lumber and things that need to lay on tailgate too.

So do you need a separate rack in the bed yo hold the bike Upright or is this all you need?

This is all you need. The wheel hangs over the tailgate and is turned 90degrees. This basically locks the bike in place. Depending on the shape of the frame it might be susceptible to tipping over. The Velcro straps on this pad help prevent that.

also, I bought this for my my older tacoma which has a "skinny" tailgate. The middle part of the pad that sits on the top is about 3x wider. It's still usable but not a great fit. Would be perfect for those tailgates that have the plastic top that makes it wider.

I tried these and they are absolute garbage, but for $10 try it, maybe it will work for your application.

Great deal. Was thinking of the $200 Rivian Bike Pad but settled for a single Yakima Highspeed bike mount.

At $10, this is a steal, is there a 4 bike equivalent though for not more than double the price?

Use 2 of these, one on each side

I looked at these in store. They're very thin and the straps don't inspire confidence. Maybe they'd be ok for driving though a neighborhood but I wouldn't trust them to hold a bike on the highway. They're not going to protect your tailgate or your bike very well.
