Shipping almost doubles the price, bringing it up to $17.24 for me. That's with a pro discount too. The base game would have been $8.54 before tax.

Same. With the $5 monthly reward for pro members, the game COULD be around $4-5 after tax. But with $6.99 shipping, it comes out to $11.xx after tax.
There's also usually a version number on the package and disc or cart that you can cross check to verify the edition. Obviously if your copy arrives missing the original artwork then you'd have to check the cartridge for the number.
