Correct.
Toyota built this as a compliance car to fill a gap in the lineup and has zero focus on it or care. If anything, it is the 'look we built an EV, it sucks!'. The first production run had WHEELS FALLING OFF. They recalled every single one! The car is slow and just utterly wild in it's idiocy.

We test drove the badge engineered Subaru version - the Solterra. Same car, different logo.
The list of infuriating choices piled fast. Want to move the driver's seat? BEEPS. CONSTANT BEEPS.
Want to back up? It beeps on the inside and inside only. Who are they warning?! Me? I"M DRIVING THE CAR.
The performance is just bad. It has a quick little bit of torque and then falls on it's face.
Did I mention the range sucks and that the car does not support fast charging so you literally cannot roadtrip it without hour-long-stops?
All in all, it just felt like Toyota was completely uninterested in building it as it is lower margin than gas/hybrid.

Then you have the ioniq 5. Hyundai's focus is straight up on on beating the Tesla Model Y. They are serious and in it. The car is shockingly better looking in person than the BZ4X. The interior feels like tomorrow and has innovative ideas, way more range, way better software, etc.
Korea is currently having the same moment that Japan had in the 90s, Hyundai should be taken seriously, esp in the EV space.

You beat me to it. Hyundai/Kia were budget jokes at first, but they've matured and improved significantly, to the point that they're at least as good as Toyota and Honda were in the '90s. If I were looking for the best value in a foreign vehicle, I'd probably look there first.

Try subaru? The premium is advertised as 300mo with 1k down. The limited I got for $326 a mo with 1k down and they made the first payment, all fees and taxes tossed in.
I am in Maine where we get an extra 2k of incentives. This deal here assumes states with even higher rebates.

Isn't that what people were doing with Tesla pre-orders before models even came to market?

I don't think it's "blindly" assuming Toyota makes a good car. They have an impressive track record of doing so, so there's an expectation that it will be good. When I open up my consumer reports magazine I expect 6 out of the top 10 cars to be a Toyota since that's been the case for the last 20 years. The fact that they put out a lemon is pretty shocking considering their track record. But I agree… always need to do your homework when it comes to a company bringing out a new type of vehicle
I used to be a Consumer Reports devotee, but the more I've learned about their methodology, assumptions, weighting, etc., the more I have come to be skeptical that their ratings mean much. For example, a new vehicle's drivetrain soundness matters a lot more to me than whether it comes with a crack in the trim, but the two issues carry equal weight in gross reported issue counts. YMMV.

For reference, I got one two days ago in NY. Toyota of New Rochelle. They had a few but they were selling fast. Went on the Toyota website and got a quote for a specific car that included taxes and fees. Then had to push for them to honor the website quote but it worked. They only have XLE AWD which is a but more expensive. Final price was around 4.6k down and 199/month. For reference, that's what I paid at the time for a new 2018 Accord LX. I am not worried about mileage because we have another car in the family for long trips. For daily commute, heck I can recharge every night at home with a L2 charger if it gets that bad. I know it's not the best EV but if it fits your requirements, for that price it really is a slick deal

Dont get the toyotas or Chevy Bolts. They have crappy onboard chargers that take super long to charge at 3rd party sites. 50kwh cap.
People are sad. Who buys a car without having the ability to charge the car overnight? People are buying electric cars without doing their homework. The public charging system is VERY expensive compared to home charging. That's why Telsa's used car prices are so low. After people realize that having an electric car while in an apartment complex makes no sense and when they realize this, they try to sell the cars.
Anyone saying, I don't like this car because of the PUBLIC charging is telling on themselves. You don't buy electric cars and use the public charging 90+% of the time. It costs almost double the cost of charging overnight and at home. Also, fast charging has issues in itself:

The Uninformed is truly dangerous.

Slow charging a battery is good for the long term health of the battery. Fast charging a lithium battery is not good long term. Look at Toyota hybrids for example, its slow charging its battery (trickle charge when you brake regen). Theres example of lasting over 300k on the Original hybrid battery.

I have two examples of over 200k on my Lexus hybrids on original hybrid battery.
It's a lease, not about long life battery. It's going to only be an obstacle, especially with how behind the electrical infrastructure is in many cities. Wasn't it only last year that California had to mandate "ev charging hours"? This is doing no one a favor while still using fossil fuels to make electricity that is lost through powerlines to be brought to a battery. America shooting itself in the foot as per usual.

Test drove this vehicle and nicely impressed. It's fast and no problems merging onto highway (can easily hit 60 in 7-8 seconds). The driver seat was comfortable. Has enough bells and whistles with the appropriate safety features.

Yes, the range is short. But for use case of 5-10 miles to work and many chargers around work area, should be fairly easy to charge. Don't like that I will have to anticipate driving mileage, charging twice a week or more, but willing to give it a go for 3 years. Family is about 110 miles away so can make that trip easily with full charge.

Pulled the trigger on a 36 month lease. There are none in stock so have to wait for delivery of in transit vehicles. Due end of April to mid May delivery. The buy out price in 3 years is $21k so there is a chance that this car may be worth more. That would make it a slick deal.

Irrespective, 3 mile for 1 hour of standard 120V charging is way too slow. 12 hour of charging is going to give 36 miles.. thats rubbish.

seemed like a half hearted attempt at EV. Hope they learn and come back with better models
They might be full hearted but they just suck at it, they need to be a different kinds mindset with EVs, traditional 💬 ng won't work that's why most of the EV makers are failing, only Tesla is ahead in this game, head and shoulders above everyone but they have quality control issues that's why I don't like to own one.
