According to Lenovo's website, this model number corresponds to the 300 nit IPS panel 45% NTSC. If this is accurate, this is a pretty great deal if you're only doing productivity work. IPS, backlit KB, touchscreen, 11hr battery life, 15W 8-core 👍

Unfortunately, Soldered LPDDR5 means it's NOT upgradable.

I don't see where anyone has been able to confirm it's a TN panel. Even if it is, this is a $250 budget laptop... they had to make some cuts. This would still be a great deal, even with a TN panel.

It's $250 bucks, man.

You can't be down here shopping at the lowest pricing tier and then act like you are owed something nice.
Low quality TN garbage has NO place in 2024 even at $250.

Thankfully, this one actually has an IPS panel, as expected. The cost delta between TN and IPS in 2024 is so minimal that is makes zero sense to keep using TN

Unrealistic and uninformed expectations abound.

People still don't learn. This is Zen 2. RAM or screen isn't the issue. You are better off getting that $350 Elitebook from a Microcenter with Zen 3, metal chassis. 3 year warranty.
Being a Zen 2 die shrink does not render the computer useless, this roughly matches an 11th gen i5 which is more than enough for the target audience of this machine,

"Unrealistic expectations", meanwhile the $250 computer actually has an IPS screen, again proving my point that TN garbage has no place, this laptop at $250 checks all the boxes for >95% of users

Please do not mistake TN laptop screens for monitor TN screens, they are NOT the same, the laptop TN screens are the lowest tier of garbage LCD currently manufactured

This I think is a mistake. Processors tend to be less of a limiting factor for most users than RAM and storage space. I like to take this sub $300 machines stuff at least 16GB and an SSD/m.2 in them and they fly for most people.
No, it's not a mistake, it's people having different interests, options and abilities than you. ffs with the people who think anyone can and should do work on a computer themselves. It's effing great if you can do that and want to, but to just assume everyone else can and should is ridiculous.

This is a laptop being sold at a heavy discount (possibly at a loss) for $250. There's a big difference between building a new $250 device and getting one on clearance. Having worked at computer retail, the margin on a laptop is probably 5%, so there's not a lot of room for demands to be made and yes the "near zero" cost difference between displays matters..

I do think people are very unrealistic in their expectations and demands from hardware manufacturers. Glad it is IPS, but I still think it is quite absurd to be acting insulted when shopping for brand new computers at these price points.

The only reason this thing even had a $489 MSRP was to bring down the price and pretend that it is a 50% deal. Lenovo does this with ThinkPads all the time

If they have to raise the price by $5 to include an IPS screen so be it. TN should rot in hell already, no place for TN garbage in 2024. It is insulting when even a $100 smartphone includes an IPS, Full HD, 90 Hz screen (and the last 2 are completely unnecessary for the target audience of a $100 smartphone, but they include it anyways)

I was going to snag this as a cheap light gaming PC for the kids, but the 610M integrated graphics falls short of Vega performance, so it's a no for me dog.

All / most of these low price deals have crappy screens, I would consider getting an older machine with a great screen, I like the dell xps.

The half-node shrink didn't do much aside from producing a marginal gain in battery efficiency. The problem with this chip is that it has a cut down iGPU that is only good for internet at 0.5 Teraflops. The iGPU levels for most of full-fat Zen 2/3 are in the 1.5 Teraflops range capable of running e-sport games. The iGPU is really dog slow when you could be getting double or triple the flops at the $300 price bracket.

For example, that ASUS Vivobook S Flip at MC also for $300 runs circles all round this laptop in both single threaded CPU and GPU workloads.

How can you tell if it's an IPS or TN? I looked at one in store and it sure looks TN.

The screen quality isn't going to be significantly better on this either.
