I worked at both places when I was younger. Taco Bell meats are pre-cooked and the beans are rehydrated. You just place them in a water boiler, whereas Del Taco you have to cut and slice and actually prep the meat/cheese/beans. If you have a local Del Taco i'd recommend trying it out as well. Their hamburgers are great too.

It's not a deal because the normally charge $3 for the cantina taco, that's outrageous.
This would be a deal at $2.50 or $3.
But at $5 with a drink that cost them virtually nothing is just an insult.
Even their regular tacos are over $2 each now, so this deal is still over 50% off their menu prices. And have you checked prices at all the other fast food places lately? Cantina taco seems like a different type of shell and the cheese on outside gives it a different experience than their normal tacos, so it actually seems reasonable at $3 when compared to their overpriced normal tacos. Mind games.

I actually like the cantina chicken soft taco better. It's really good with the new green sauce, too. @Jaggsta is right, the crispy taco shell can get really firm once they grill/fry it.

It's because Taco Bell, like most fast food, is it's own category. Someone who craves McD isn't craving a good hamburger, they are craving a fast food burger. Sometimes I'm craving a fancy mexican restaurant, sometimes a local family-owned joint, sometimes a chain assembly line style (Chipotle, Bubbakoo, etc), but sometimes I just have a craving for taco bell.

And sometimes, it's just because it's the only thing open at 1am.
