I wish however, that I had first tried to activate the code on my US account through the app.
It might not have worked, but when I tried some hours afterwards, it at least recognized the code was used already and didn't complain about it being from a different region. You could get 250 ps stars through the PS app potentially as there are 2 days or so left.
