Home Depot has their exclusive:
Toshiba 5,000 BTU 115 Volt Window Air Conditioner w/Free Shipping $101

Their title says it has a remote, but it's a mechanical control so it probably doesn't.

OR drill a small hole in the middle of the bottom pan ...

But not through the condenser. Some of these smaller ACs are designed to keep some water in the pan. The fan slops the water on the condenser and it makes it more efficient.

Only if you have larger rooms. I have 4 5000BTUs in my house right now and perfectly happy with them. Better than central air IMO. If one fails, just buy another one to replace it instead of spending thousands for a new HAVC system.

One potential benefit from a low btu is the lower wattage consumption. So during a blackout, if you are running on some sort of battery backup system, you will get more runtime from this than an 8000 btu unit.

yeah, and the makers dont put much engineering on these low btu units, often they end up being the most rattling units, crappiest compressors.

how frequent are the blackout events tho.

also a 8k btu unit doesnt work as hard as a 5k unit might have to.

I was speaking about people with central hvac and would only be using these during blackouts like myself. For instance this 5000 btu unit uses about 470 watts, while this 8000 btu unit uses 710 watts:

So if you are using a 2kwh battery to run this at night (because generators are too loud at night), you would get about 5 hours out of this vs less than 3 hours for the 8000 btu unit.

You really should buy the right btu size for the area you are cooling. Too few btu and the room doesn't get cold or dry. Too many btu's and the room gets cold but doesn't run long enough to remove humidity. Wet cold air is yuck.
As far as energy goes. One 10,000 btu air conditioner is going to be more efficient than two 5000btu units.

The reviews state you get what you pay for and it stops working after a year. If you do end up getting this, grab a 2-3 yr warranty.

Or just use a credit card that'll add to the warranty.
