Thanks for information. Strange though, Acer website doesn't have its SSD specs, only third part techpowerup has specs sheet.
Keep in mind, companies constantly change components. That's why the manufacturer gives vague specs. Don't put too much stock in the specs listed in those databases, many are out of date.

Don't these have a problematic controller?
No, the problems were with products that had firmware from more than 2 years ago. The IG5236 controller has been out since January 2020. Some early drives had problems in 2021. I'm not aware of any products using it from 2023 onward that have ever had a problem.

I own the 1TB version of this with the same controller and it's been perfect since March 2023. This does run hot if the ambient temp is high. Mine can get in the 50's under constant use, but you really need to keep it under 70C max.

The product page is here: https://www.predatorstorage.com/p...4-ssd.html

Full PDF sheet is here: https://www.predatorstorage.com/u...ations.pdf

And I also attached a picture. FYI to others, nothing about the GM7000 has changed in over a year. This is not a product where Acer is changing the components to cut costs.

The only downsides are the heat and the fact that it's claimed you can't remove the graphene pad because it will void your warranty - the serial information is on that pad. I didn't remove the pad for my application.

TLC and 2GB of DRAM for those who care.
Not up on SSD technology is "TLC and 2GB Dram" good - bad?

My understanding of these drives:
  • While the GM7000 shares a controller that has had severe issues causing data loss and failures with other manufacturers, Acer has not had those issues. The issues were corrected with a firmware update, suggesting Acer's firmware corrected the issue before it was released.
  • While the drive is generally just as fast as many other drives in it's category, it has high idle power consumption and is not recommended for laptops.
  • You will likely need a better heatsink than the adhesive-backed one they include, and you will need to carefully peel off said heatsink to install the new heatsink. It will throttle during moderate to heavy usage otherwise.
  • It works well in the PS5 with a better heatsink.
  • It does have a slightly higher than average failure rate compared to more popular drives, and the RMA process can be frustrating.
Overall it's a great drive with minor issues.

This is good and what you want for an OS, production, or gaming drive. TLC has higher endurance than QLC drives, which is why QLC drives are cheaper. Drives that lack DRAM cache are best used as secondary or storage drives as their overall performance is hampered by lack of DRAM.

I was thinking these for a NAS for cache/storage. I'm sure these would be great.

For a storage drive in a NAS it should be fine, but as a cache drive you might see accelerated wear. NAS drives with special firmware exist for that reason, but as long as you are prepared for possible early failure you can save quite a bit of money.

Not a bad deal for an OS drive. I need something for storage and does not need the super high read/write rate. Something around 1500MB is good enough. I need it to store movies for the 20hrs flight to Thailand with a nvme to usb c for the meta quest 3.

This is a good choice for an external drive. HMB drives (DRAMless) often don't work well, if at all, in external enclosures since they don't usually **have access to the system's DRAM through USB.

Test for heat before you go to Bangcock as it may get too hot and need a better heatsink and/or enclosure (some enclosures include a heatsink).

EDIT:
**Some external Thunderbolt drives do support HMB drives for Macs, but they are pricey.

Ordered 4 16TB HDD from AAAwave and 3 arrived damaged. No doubt was played kickball by UPS, you might think this is a negative review but AAAwave switched from UPS ground to Fedex 2 day ground shipping on hard drives ( I guess this happened alot) and they paid for return shipping for my 3 bad drives and said they will ship out brand new replacements the same day they recieve the RMA drives so I will NOT have to have AAAwave send the drives back to Seagate and wait for Seagate to do an RMA ( This means I will NOT be getting a rerfurbished replacement drive back and the process wont take weeks!) which is great customer service IMO. AAAwave offers great prices, stands behind their products and as a bonus my $900 order for hard drives incurred zero shipping cost and ZERO taxes on that order! I feel confident to place future orders with them!

To the experts- For the purpose of upgrading HP Desktop 256GB C drive - that is dying- How does this compare to Samsung 990 EVO SSD if size is not a consideration (1TB vs 2TB) (https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-In...r=1-3&th=1)

I had forgotten about them for about a decade until last year, was glad to see they were still in business. Both the GPU I purchased last year and my more recent order of these drives incurred the same lack of sales tax, which is always a pleasant surprise
