23 and me is a BAD VENDOR. Profit driven, using your data in stuff they sell to others that is supposed to be anonymized but wasn't or wasn't properly (more than once). They've been hacked by China (most recent one: https://techcrunch.com/2023/12/04...ion-users/), too. Our neighbor down the street has a daughter that worked there from the beginning and has plenty of horror stories. Never do 23 and me.
Never.
I don't believe Ancestry proper has been hacked. Their subsidiary rootsweb was in 2017, but unlike 23 and me, they didn't blame their customers for their system's security failure. I know plenty who have done Ancestry and found blood relatives they didn't know they had. So, and easy recommendation for Ancestry, especially at this price!
Share your genetic and racial info for free in their data records. Your insurance might access them in future to decipher about your health issues down the lane. Dont share your DNA period.
Don't waste your money on this crap. I did mine with 23andme and they asked a ton of survey questions about my origin and the results they provided was exactly what I gave them. It took them 3 mths for providing nothing more than I already know. It is a total scam.

Enjoy making law enforcement have an easy time prosecuting you and any family member who commits a crime and they recover DNA in the future. And hackers too can get your DNA and potentially use it against you. And people are paying for giving up their constitutional priviledge?
There is serious concerns brewing that 23andme is in serious financial trouble and will get bought out for their trove of DNA they have on so many people.

Yeah that's exactly what I was going to say, you better make sure no one in your family did anything criminally before signing up for one of these, cause they gonna find them. So many cold cases solved this way now, but I guess if you're not worried about giving all of your generic info away to greedy large companies seeking your to sell your data, then have at it!

WSJ recently ran an article why it is a real concern about someone buying it, especially foreign entity. Perhaps you read it and disagreed?
Don't forget it isn't just current relatives, it is your children and grandchildren that can easily be narrowed down in the future.
If you purchase through Ancestry, you have to pay an extra charge to return the kit to them. I believe it's $9.95. If you buy through Amazon, return shipping to Ancestry is included and there is no extra charge.

Only way you can know is a scam if you give them a wrong origin (on purpose) and have them prove that you are wrong.

I don't know if you meant returning the dna sample or order. Order Idk, but i bought from ancestry before and the sample return shipping was in a prepaid package in the the box.
Edit: I think you meant returning extra kits from the order. OK, good to know.

If you are from anywhere in Asia (Central Asia or Southeast Asia or Middle East) then the test won't give you any good results. DNA tests need a very large database to identify the origin and the bifurcations. Asian people hardly have this service at their disposal and 99% have never done any tests; so there is no database to compare against.
People need to know that this is more of an American and European thing and more of a first world country thing too. Results will be very sketchy outside of that.

If you were simply hoping for more specificity, I've seen a lot better results in that regard with Ancestry than 23andMe.
