Yeah I'm really conflicted here. At 3499 vs something like the Corsair Vengeance at 3999, I'd say pay the premium to get non proprietary parts. But this price is so good, and the reviews of the R16 thermals are so improved, at this point I'm totally not sure anymore.

I've gotten burned by my last two attempts to DIY and ended up spending extra time and money buying an extra CPU/GPU/mobo just to prove which component needed to be RMA'ed. If I spend any more time on the build itself, I don't know when I'll actually game on it.

Okay generalizations aside: the reviews of this R16 in particular show pretty decent temps, noise, and not a lot of evidence of throttling on the CPU. I would agree with you about the previous XPS front page deal or even the R15 but I don't see anything wrong with the R16 supported by data.

In this proprietary form factor, plus the woes of the 14900, I'd be tempted for the other offer with the Ryzen 9. Generally I prefer intel's, however, with the issues 14900's have plus intel's habit of changing sockets every 1-2 generations, the Ryzen version might be easier to do a CPU upgrade on for a while. Given the form factor, upgrades outside of adding RAM or CPU would be difficult I'd imagine, but AMD seems to have a track record for supporting sockets for a while. If memory serves AM4 released ~2016 and AM5 released late 2022 or early 2023. If the AM4 is any indicator, the AM5 socket has a good ~6 years of chip upgrades available (or ~5 years of upgrades left.)

All that said, I haven't kept up with a lot of the latest, just headlines, meaning I only know enough to be dangerous vs helpful. Smilie So if I got any of this wrong, please correct me.
