Is there a narrower non-espresso grind range in this version versus the normal Encore?

This works for espresso and French press, so yes

Price for performance perhaps? At this price, Baratza Encore is $70 cheaper.

If you expect the DF54 to produce no static like their advertising and youtube legion of reviewers said, you're in for disappointment. What they really meant is no extra static produced by the grinding process. And that's only one of the many sources of static for your grinding experience.

A little bit, there is a steep rise out of the espresso range that leads to a shorter and steeper sloped path for the filter to fresh press settings, this reduces the adjustability for filter by about 30% (roughly) but honestly most folks aren't going to need that fine an adjustment for filter or similar, the only real downside might be if you do pourovers where adjusting the grind size affects the flow through the coffee much like it does with espresso.

For filter coffee which one is a better choice: Virtuoso+ or Encore ESP?

I have a regular Baratza Encore and a DF54. I have to spritz water on the beans when using the Encore to avoid static. I've not needed to do the same for the DF54.

I bought the DF54 expecting similar experience to yours but ended up disappointed.
You're likely in a humid environment. This isn't the case for many people and humidity changes by season as well. My DF54 produced tons of static if I don't rdt. Even with rdt, it's not mess-free grinding.

Personally, I dislike rdt since the beans stick to the measuring cup and stick to the grinder hopper. I always have to use a small object to help the beans drop all the way to the grinding chamber.

Did you by any chance try the upgraded burr [frenchpresscoffee.com] in your old Encore? I swapped to the M2 burr a few years ago and the improvement was substantial (way quieter and faster). Would be curious how that compares.

I can't speak for the Encore, but I've used the Virtuouso+ for the past year and like it. I use a Ninja drip with paper filters and like the Virtuoso's catch bin for the transfer. Putting the empty bin back in slowly is key to not having grounds all over the counter. Some roasts with more chaff will static cling to the Virtuoso's plastic catch bin more than others. I always tap the top cover to knock the remaining grounds into the bin too which helps. I would expect more mess with that given the Encore's catch cup. Regarding setting, I typically leave mine around 18 for drip. Will go coarse only for cold brew pitcher. Maintenance is easy.
