You need to get rid of the weeds before you do anything. They will outcompete anything else. Use some good broad-spectrum herbicides. Theres a bajillion schools of thought on ideal post-emergants...I recommend that you watch Silver Cymbal's youtube channel; he has very detailed first-hand feedback on caring for his own lawn, and its totally lay-person friendly.

I agree with the other poster; you mainly do stuff in the fall. 90% of my work is after columbus day. aerating, dethatching, overseeding, fertilizing. You may have to leave your lawn for dead this year, since all of the major growth is happening right this moment. Once the heat sets in, growth slows down and the weeds start having a field day, which is why the weeds are the main enemy in the summer (and drought, of course).

What's the seed mix in this? I can't find it and hoping it's not some contractor blend.

I'm skipping this this year and pregerminating. Wish me luck!

FYI there is a very small amount of seed in these things compared to the ratio of fertilizer. If it is seed you want you are better off with a product like https://a.co/d/c7SQW5l

My lawn is in pretty bad shape. It used to be nice but then 3 straight drought summers and I gave up after it was taken over by weeds when the grass went dormant early.

Would this be good to try to bring back my lawn, or should I have thrown down a pre-emergent or weed killer before trying to seed with this?

Would it be better to buy this and wail until October to use it?

If you're in cool season grass zone, you want to wait until fall for over seeding , so mid to late September. The only seeding that should be done now is spot seeding.

Yes, you should have done preemergent already, and it's time to do a post emergent herbicide now.

Is that the order with those steps? (aeration, dethatching, overseeing, fertilizing) and should there be a waiting period between each?

The last deal I saw on this was a couple years ago and it's was about $10 or so cheaper. I've used 7 bags of this on dirt that was just from digging a water line about 80 ft. I prepped by aerating and other things.
This mix is mostly additives and not much seed. 7 bags and it has barely grown. I had straw all over it and watered it when it hadn't rained. You have to babysit it. I've got one more bag and am not even gonna use it. Just get grass seed

Lol my Amazon account doesn't lie and shows that I paid $9.98 for this 40lb bag on June 14th, 2020. May have been a super slick deal but surely not lying. I had paid $36.99 a year earlier.
