I suspect this is because the modern shoes aren't made to meet the standards of the specific sport; instead they are "lifestyle" shoes.
A great example are the Adidas Equipment retros that were produced a while back. I was a 5000m distance runner in college and actually ran in a pair of Adidas Equipment shoes my freshman year. Great shoes, put 80/mi a week on them and over 1000 mi total. The new retros? Not even close, different materials, different midsole, the torsion bar was fake, etc. I wouldn't run 1 mile in them, let alone 80 in a week.

I have these for casual. I think they would be a bit disappointing for basketball and feel hard on landing. Also might tear out faster than expected.
What do you think will be good for basketball?
It's just my opinion, but simply a shoe with air or in the basketball section of like reebok, etc. I personally stay away from retro street type shoes for exercise as they may not be built like they were originally.
