Edit: I've personally traded in several devices (phones and watch) in Mountain View. In all instances they physically took the device and gave me credit instantly. I can't personally vouch for the other stores.

Does initiating a return mess up the trade in though?
Only after the return label is scanned in transit by the shipping carrier does the return process begin.
if you return it after your trade in is approved, you'll get google store credit for excess funds.
Also no way to "cancel" the return it'll just automatically expire.

Have read too many stories like above, unfortunately.
I was thinking about trading in an old iPad for the tablet without a dock - $399. I see that my Amex Blue Preferred credit card reimburses up to $300 if a seller won't take a return back within 90 days. If this just works like a credit from Amex and not a chargeback I wonder if this will avoid what you just stated.
After all you need to buy an iPad + pay extra $100, so you'd probably pay at least $200+tax for this tablet and the dock.
Its an Android tablet so there is not much meaning of this anyway. If it was more straight up $200 I might have tried it.

Which then you turn in and grab one of these Google tablets for an even exchange 400$ credit / 400$ pixel tablet and just pay the taxes & fees
