Edit: I've personally traded in several devices (phones and watch) in Mountain View. In all instances they physically took the device and gave me credit instantly. I can't personally vouch for the other stores.

1st gen 11inch Pro = 3rd gen 12.9inch pro
I compared a9 to google. It looks the same but Samsung has a better display for sure. However the lowest I could find was $250. Im getting this Google tablet for 50 out of pocket because of an eBay ipad purchase (95 but with 45 google one cashback). I don't need the 120mhz refresh on Samsung so I rate the google tablet as a better deal.
We have laptops and a iPad Pro in the house but typically have Amazon tablets in the house for kids. I do the minor hack for google play and away we go. Looking forward to having a slightly larger display available and a bit more ram (8 vs 4 on current Amazon tablet) + no google play tinkering. Btw, the new fire 11 tablet would be $120 with an Amazon trade in and that has less ram (6gb). Another plus for this google deal.
Unless you are using some niche app or need an Apple exclusive app the tablet experience is basically the same. I'm talking about the base iPad here, not the Pro with the 120hz display obviously.
Google is rumored to launch a first party pencil and keyboard for this soon-ish btw.
Edit: Also, if you want to use this for kids or as a family device this is a much better buy than an iPad because it has multi user support and you can sign in to your user with your fingerprint.
I got the google tablet because I wanted an 11 inch mid tier tablet for 50 bucks out of pocket and didn't want to pay 4x that for the current Samsung s9. In my mind other than screen it's pretty much a similar deal.

Just traded my Tab S8 in at Samsung.com yesterday and got a new S9 (AMOLED 120Hz display, expandable storage and way better CPU) for $199. Was able to even pick up at local BB same day.
The Apple trade-in values are the winner here, and if you can get $399 for an old iPad and want to switch to Android, it's a good deal. Who in their right mind would trade in a iPad Pro 12.9 for $399, though?
The one thing I don't like is having to pay the full price up-front then they (hopefully) credit you the trade-in value after you send it in. Samsung does it right -- I paid $199 to get my Tab S9, then I send in my old Tab S8. Done deal.
I have an old iPad Pro 10.5 that I'm likely going to trade in for this. It's become a media device over productivity. I'll just need to sell off my apple pencil and keyboard but that should help to cover the Android equivalents. For a device that's 7 years old, it's a good swap since it likely isn't receiving iPadOS 18 in the fall.Second part was wrong. iPad Pro gen 1 (9.7") and gen 2 (10.5") are not included in this deal.
