I've been really impressed by the black & orange ones from AliEexpress for ~$2.
Best feature is a high sensitivity mode you can turn on that will detect if an outlet is hot without having to fully insert the probe or get right against the wire.

I would not trust any cheapo testers from Aliexpress. Especially when it comes to electricity. Get a reliable tester for few extra bucks. Just my 2 cents

I have multiple "good" testers already and just picked up an Aliexpress one on a whim because I was curious.
I wasn't expecting to be impressed, but I've found the high sensitivity mode to be more reliable for general work on 120/220v circuits around the house than my $20-40 testers.
The key with any tester is to follow the same live-dead-live procedure required by OSHA for high voltage work:
1. Verify that the detector detects a known live source of power
2. Verify that it doesn't alert on the circuit that has been turned off
3. Verify again that it detects a known live source of power
Testing before and after is vital to ensure that the detector is working properly and didn't malfunction, run out of battery, or power down at the point you tested that voltage was off.
Beyond that, one of the biggest improvements to safety you can make at home is to get a lockout tagout kit so you can lock breakers for circuits you're working on in the off position.
Doesn't matter that you've confirmed absence of voltage if someone else in the house can flip the breaker back on without realizing you're working.
