You need the whole 6 month for cricket or they won't unlock it. IIRC, they won't let you downgrade your plan easily either.
It's only good for people using Cricket, but for everyone else, avoid.

It's unclear from here, but for everyone who bought phones on Metro so far, the unblock period is still 6 months right? I.e. the one year rule takes effect only for those who purchase devices starting now?

Although it's another 6 month, it seems like it's still only one month active service so I guess that's good?
Not a chance. 96% of shit is locked to the specific MVNO. If you're lucky something will work on the primary postpaid provider.
An example being you get this at Metro, and it might work on T-Mobile right away (while it's still locked to Metro) however it's far more likely it ONLY works on Metro until the unlock date.
Metro has been one of the only places to buy discounted phone and have it unlock free without needing to be active customer. Unsure on new policy.
Cricket is ATT and you're forced to remain customer (paying phone bill monthly) to eventually get the device unlocked.
Spectrum Mobile gives us Motorola Razr PLUS 2023 for free with any phone trade-in (+ $30 x 2 month service for unlocking).
The PLUS version is a much better flip phone than the regular one.

Sometimes there are exception like Verizon and Visible, but even that only works one way rather than both being compatible with each other. Most times it just won't work.
