Or, you could purchase something like a Diletta Mio or Quick Mill Silvano which can warm up in less than 15 minutes. They will still be repairable, at home no less, at least a decade from now.

Every espresso machine is a compromise. Buying a throw-away appliance, like a Breville, should be considered during the purchasing process. The fact this same approach is being even applied to such expensive items and EVs, like Teslas, is stultifying.

I have a Breville Barista Pro. While it is "ready" after 3 seconds. The group head and the portafilter never gets warmed up. I usually turn my machine on 20 min before use and also pulling empty shots just to warm up group head, portafilter, and cup. The lelit is for enthusiasts who want to have more control over the whole process.

I have a Miele super auto and it's ready in a few seconds, I got lazy, Used to have a Gaggia Classic with a smart plug to preheat it
I have a Jura that heats up quickly too, but these are a different animal. You'll get better shots from this one for sure.

Personally I'll take the tradeoff though - in 3 minutes my machine can go from off to a full latte macchiato done with the press of a button.

bit the bullet and went with a linea micra last week. these e61 machines take 20-25 minutes to heat up, so take that into consideration.

Heat up time: 24 minutes. Does this mean I need to wait that long to make the first coffee?
Depends how picky you are. E61's have a lot of thermal mass to heat. The water in the boiler might be hot in a few minutes but you should wait 20 min for the rest of the group head to heat up for optimal temperature stability. Else as the water travels to the coffee it will cool down. But if my guests want espresso martinis at 9pm, I will rip a shot on mine after 10min.

24 minutes is complete bullshit it takes a couple of hours to get that much steel to steady state
Not always true. My '09 E61 Quick Mill Anita in a room with 66-degree ambient temps takes ~50 minutes to warm up. Plugged into a timer the machine is ready-to-go the moment I need it in the morning.

Har har, very good joke.

If you want to have an actual conversation about this -- a smart outlet turns on my E61 machine 30 minutes before my alarm every morning, and can make coffee as soon as I wake up. I will continue to enjoy my machine for a very long time.

The Bambino is a great machine, and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in trying out home espresso without breaking the bank. You're much better investing in a nice grinder than an expensive machine.

Completely different technology. There's a reason they're still making E61 machines 60+ years after it was invented.

Good luck getting any parts to fix a Breville when it goes bad. You can easily get decades out of an E61 machine if you keep it serviced.
Well Breville owns Lelit so...

Bianca is a great machine that has duel boiler, preinfusion, and flow profiling. I use Silvia Pro X myself. Just use a smart plug and warm it up 20 mins, no biggie.

There are levels to espresso machines, just like there are levels to grinders. Each additional feature adds to the cost, and for what you get in this machine it is a terrific value, especially at this price.

External pressure valve
Temperature control
Preinfusion
Flow control
Heating element - thermoblock? single boiler? heat exchanger? double boiler?
Then in a semi-auto machine you can get extra features - like programmable pre infusion, programmable flow control, etc.

This machine also comes with IMS baskets and a spouted and bottomless portafilter.

This machine has all of the manual features you would want, as well as some programmable ones. Not at the level of a Decent, but also thousands less. You will not find a better machine at this price level.

So like any machine or anything. You'll get x amount of years if serviced.

The guys talking about the heat up time have a valid point. Not everyone has time to wait 24 minutes to wait for water to heat for coffee which is subjectively better tasting after a certain point.

Breville products are notorious for not lasting, not being designed for owners to fix, and using proprietary parts that are sometimes unobtainable. That is the polar opposite of E61 machines.

Of course there are diminishing returns on espresso machines as you spend more money, just like literally any other thing you can spend money on. If waiting 24 minutes is your hang-up with this (which is a non-issue with a $10 smart plug), it clearly is not for you. That is fine - you do you. Not sure why you give a shit about what other people buy.

I've had a Gaggia Classic Pro for a couple of years now (~$300'ish refurbed from WholeLatteLove) and modded with the amazing Gaggiuino project. With about $100 in parts, you can have all the amazing features of a $1500+ machine

1. Pressure Profiling
2. Temperature Control
3. Pre-infusion
4. Builtin scale to control output weight automatically.
5. Great steam pressure

This is a single boiler system, and It heats up in about 4 minutes. I have it connected to a smart plug. Best parts of the day for me are. "Hey Siri - turn on the espresso machine".
By the time I'm ready prepping my puck, the machine is ready to go. After pulling a shot, it takes < 1 minute to reach steam temperature/pressure, and 30 seconds of that to end up with a great latte.

With the money saved on the espresso machine, I've splurged on a Niche Zero grinder, which is an amazing device as well.
