      IMO, Heretic is the best one here. Hexen & Hexen II have good ideas (e.g., different character classes) mixed with awful ideas (e.g., every level or hub requires you to travel back-&-forth multiple times to gradually solve & unlock the sub-sections of each level/hub).

      The Steam versions of each game are also sort of outdated for modern PCs. Search the Internet for fan-made mods that update the resolution & control setup for these games. ZDoom website probably has the best fan-made mods for Heretic & Hexen. Hexen 2 has a free fan-made mod on Archive.org.

      Im going to do that too but for $1, its worth it to have originals in a sand box.

      Excellent games! These were great plays after the Doom and Wolfenstein rush. I really liked Heretic since it gave a Doom fantasy / medieval atmosphere. I still have my Hexen jewel case with the badass ominous figure in the arch gateway.

      I still have Hexen in the original unwrapped pc game box, remember they were fairly big.

      Though I haven't played these games for many, many years, I still have the original CDs and boxes. I loved replaying them in all the different character modes. Truly great games.
