Well, if the item was actually popular, people would probably comment on it. But if the SD staff just "makes" it popular, it's not going to get as many comments because people are either not interested or don't consider it a good deal.

The inferior non li-on model made it to FP last week for $25 or so. This model is superior to the stainless steel on Amazon for $74, and retails $80 on Wahls site

Reaching popular is simply a deal accumulating enough votes from the community to escalate it, there isn't anyone "making" deals popular. Like I mentioned before it would be great if there were more comments on deals in general! The community aspect of the site is a wealth of knowledge about an item relative to the price and other similar items in the category. I've certainly made more informed decisions on what items to buy or pass on from the comments.
