I have to commend synology. I bought mine in 2018, and it's still going strong, no issues. Probably the longest running electronic I have at this point (has survived several computer upgrades, a few TV's, microwaves, two mesh router systems, three robot vacuums, and lots of other misc). Maybe electronics are just made poorly these days, but my Synollgy NAS keeps chugging along.

I just wish it had the Intel processors to transcode on Plex better.

I love my Roku and don't want to have to run a separate second computer just for Plex.

Not wanting to chance being stuck in a closed system dealing with a failure, I made the migration last year and Synology is so much better and faster. Takes a little more skill to operate but you're also rewarded with a much deeper and useful product.

Same here, my 8 bay from 2015 is still kicking strong. I have 16GB of RAM and the Intel atom processor I just restarted it and put in new drives. Solid as a rock. OS is very smooth. I have had a few Netgear readyNAS servers that were functionally good, but Synology whipped the floor with them in every way. Look who is still around. They are on top of the security issues. They are a top player and targeted.

Officially, the DS1821+ documentation says it only supports up to 32GB ram but it's been shown that it can actually take up to 64GB (2x32GB) though you will end up removing the 4GB stick that comes installed.

Having the extra RAM is good for Docker or VM apps. If you're just starting out, a DS920+/DS923+ is all you may need. I still also use a DS920+..

Hey all -- Asustor 10 bay NAS owner here and while I've been happy with mine it has been well over 6 years of uptime since replacing a Thecus NAS that I had used 5 years prior to that. I'm now looking to upgrade before Asustor stops supporting it. The new-to-me feature set on this Synology model looked really impressive so I ordered one from this deal as it was a pretty good price point albeit it has been around for 3 years or so. Unfortunately after playing around with it and looking to migrate my 4x6TB Ironwolf and 4x16TB Ironwolf Pro arrays, I'm only now catching just how limited Synology's compatibility list is. It is truly shocking that neither of these model of HDDs are supported. Sooooo, that leads me to a conclusion that this compatibility list is a really cheesy way to avoid providing support for what should be a pretty dang razor sharp industry standard in HDDs. The situation is even worse for newer models. I completely recognize this is my fault for not checking the compability list and while I am "ok" at command line interface to do some basic manual raid manipulation, I cannot fathom not having support to help perform a recovery for a broken array and/or any strange issues. I appreciate that if they work they work but do not want to risk it. I'm returning mine.

I wouldn't return it if I were you. The 'supported drives' list is just a way for them to sell drives. I wouldn't worry about 'support'. I've had zero issues in 7 years of running 24/7. I've thrown numerous drives in it. All good.

The compatibility list is just harddrives Synology has tested, and your drives are on it. The list is updated pretty frequently

I understand what you are saying, but if they haven't tested the drive then it is possible the drive may be causing the issue. I also haven't heard of any consumer being told support won't help them due to having drives not on the list.

I'm so tempted to not return it but I chatted with support and they confirmed that my 16TB Ironwolf Pro drives are not the same as the one version on their compatibility list and that they would not be able to provide any technical support. Even worse, when a drive is not on the compatibility list you no longer will receive SMART and/or Ironwolf health management for those that use those drives. This is so unfortunately because based upon Seagate's specifications at https://www.seagate.com/content/d...-en_US.pdf the one I am using is a superior drive. The agent suggested that I fill out a request for them to evaluate it which I did. I chatted with a support agent this morning and my ST16000NT001 are not supported even though they are superior to the ST16000NE000 on the compatibility list. He also confirmed no support would be provided if I used them.
