Having the extra RAM is good for Docker or VM apps. If you're just starting out, a DS920+/DS923+ is all you may need. I still also use a DS920+..
For lower models, if you want 2.5Gbps, I've been able to use

These folks use a lot of circular and backwards logic to justify what they're doing, but it all comes down to a simple fact -- it's not legal.

I understand what you are saying, but if they haven't tested the drive then it is possible the drive may be causing the issue. I also haven't heard of any consumer being told support won't help them due to having drives not on the list.
