Yeah tums does jack for me. Are you saying you just eat like a spoonful of baking soda? Or do you dissolve a certain amount in water? I'm curious. Tell more.
A 1/4 teaspoon is usually enough for me. I just eat it and wash it down with some water. you could mix it in a little water too and drink it.

Esomeprazole (Nexium) also works a lot better for me than Omeprazole (Prilosec). With Omeprazole I was taking baking soda 3-4x a day. With Esomeprazole usually none during the day, but for precauction a little before bed.

If you have insurance, get your doctor to write you a script for Omeprazole. It's cheaper and you get the 40mg dose.

I was eating a bottle of tums almost daily to fight the acid reflux. This has been only thing that relieves it. Been on it for many years now. If I miss a day then by nighttime it's unbearable

If I'm ever to left on a deserted island I want chap stick and omeprazole !
Really?! I read it's pretty bad for the kidney. The over the counter bottle says to not exceed 2 weeks at a time. Last year my doctor wanted me to take Omeprazole 40 mg per day for 3 months. After 3-4 days, my stomach felt even worse - waking up in the middle of night with sour stomach. I continue taking it for 6 weeks and I had to give up and fired my doctor. 3 month later I began to lose a lot of weight. I certainly didn't have a good experience with this thing.

I've been on Famotidine for years (Pepcid AC) and for those who taking it long term, famotidine, which is a H2 blocker, is a safer, "cleaner" long-term medication compared to omeprazole which is a PPI. One of the main disadvantages of a PPI is that it strips more minerals from your system which can cause things like vitamin deficiencies, make your bones more susceptible to fractures and increase in various diseases/infections.

Short term, it isn't as problematic.

People take PPIs (Nexium / Prilosec) for decades. There are some side effects, but untreated acid reflux is much worse for you than lifelong PPIs.

if you are chronically need PPI . Read up about H.Pylori infection . You may have it . And PPI alone only partially treat it . You will need antibiotic to eradicate them.

Yeah, with these proton pump inhibitors, you're supposed to take them for two weeks and then stop. Like... there's a reason why the standard package has 14 pills. But once they became OTC, people started taking them continuously, which can end up doing as much harm as good in the long-term.

some of these acid reflux drugs like Omeprazole can greatly reduce the efficacy of anti-platelet drugs like Plavix. Doctors won't tell you this, because they never bother to look things like this up, but it's something to consider.

As someone who's been fighting acid for 20+ yrs PPI like omeprazole works very well but eventually had to stop because it gave me heart palpitations and night unrest which caused a lot of sleepless nights. I may be the only one on this boat but plain greek yogurt has been the best solution for me along with making some minor lifestyle changes like not eating before bed and cutting down on acidic food like coffee, pop, alcohol, etc.

Unpasteurized yogurt is a great natural probiotic so restoring the good gut bacteria while fighting acid has been a huge win-win. My gut has never felt better and I rarely get flare ups anymore. Not to mention plain yogurt is very cheap and easy to make more at home.

Sadly, doctors keep saying it's fine to take this stuff for years. Though now they are pushing Dupixent... which has it's own bag of risks and side effects but it's supposed to treat the actual issue unlike PPI's which only treat symptoms.
