Think I may get it. I've had a vertical propane one for 3 years and while I love the smoke it produces, it is a pain to monitor. The heat swings so much that you always have to keep an eye on it.

Have this one for about 5 years. Get a smoke tube. Think about passing this to my son for a Masterbuilt gravity with mod.

you may find the same with a traeger. any grill really can have issues. ive had multiple traegers and learned the quirks and how to mitigate for them. theyre very simple machines, easy to work on/replace parts/upgrade. if you arent ready to pull the trigger on a new one, consider a craigslist alert in your area. i have scored multiple traegers and rehabed them before gifting to friends. i found one for $100 in good shape similar to this listing and gave it to my neighbor. previous owner was frustrated with low temp issues. we raised the chimney cap and had no issues at all. for $500, i think you would be happy with this model, if youre readynto pay new grill money. not that my endorsement means anything lol. i saw this listing because of my alerts. i previously scored one of the big masterbilt gravity series charcoal smokers and ran it exclusively for about a year because my traeger needed a new controller. while it was good, i missed my pellet grill flavor.

I have this, it's run great for years. I use it for smoking because it's a smoker. If you want a grill buy a grill, it will be much better at being a grill. But for smoking this thing is pretty bombproof, only mod I added was some lava lock on the lid to seal in smoke and some screen zip tied to the stack and drip to keep mice/squirrels out.

That's why I like my Pit Boss, and upgraded from a basic one to a nicer one with wifi and more features a few years ago. They're usable for direct grilling and things other smoking, while being really good smokers. I'm not saying they're perfect, but I like them, and there's a variety of models and styles to suite different needs. A $700 Traeger doesn't even come with a front shelf, even though it's in one of the pictures? Jeez.

I bought a Traeger second hand from an in-law. It's fine aside from a couple minor and maybe one major nitpick. I guess the major is the lack of smoke flavor on the food. I feel like I could bake a cake in mine and you couldn't tell it was baked on a grill. The food itself is cooked well. My other issue is mine doesn't allow the pellets to be dumped. Not sure if this one does or doesn't but it's something I wish mine had.
I still have a Weber kettle to start my long cooks. A smoke tube is cool unless you're trying to do a lot as once. Despite all of that I still recommend getting one.

Wouldnt the Costco deal be a better option, given Costco generous return policy in the even you need to return this thing in 2-4 years if something goes bust?
