My wife and I have probably 500+ hours each in this game. Some would call that a massive waste of time, but seriously the adventures and fun we've had has brought us together, and we now enjoy all kinds of co-op games together (Minecraft, Sea of Thieves, Deep Rock Galactic) because of Valheim. Playing co-op games is our evening go-to and I find that the teamwork and communication required has been amazing for our marriage. Beats the heck out of watching TV 😁
Does running this on a server require an additional Steam account and copy of the game? Or can you be logged into 2 pc's with the same Steam account with one running the server and one running your client side?
There's a dedicated server, I run a Valheim server container on a home server and it doesn't require any additional licenses to run. Each player needs their own copy of course.
You can also start your client as a server so people can join your game while you play.
I'll add that inventory is portable between servers. You can have a character decked out from one server (armor weapons etc) and show up on a new one with all that stuff. I prefer having a new character for each server so I don't make progression too easy. That said, it's possible to bring resources over from one game to another this way.
I like being able to look back at all the terrraforming and things you've constructed and have that feeling of accomplishment "I did this" lol.
Damn the building in this game is very frustrating. Things being placed incorrectly all of the time. It mentions snapping, but this is some of the worst I've dealt with lol Palworld for example can have an entire building done before I can try to figure out which of the 9 roof options to use
This game is worth full price. Do yourself a favor and buy it. Like others, I have hundreds of hours and truly love this game, but even from an objective lens, you will get your money's worth. Content is slow to release, usually one major biome added per year, but it's such an amazing ride.

Its the viking offspring of minecraft and dark souls. 3000 hours in. Can be brutally unforegiving, or you can just chill and fish and hunt deer all day. Everything has a satysfying feel. Superb building mechanics and progression style. 10 bucks is a steal.
Also, the honeymoon period for this game was quite long and enjoyable.

Yep, it only requires 1 license to run both the server and client to play simultaneously. If you have a local save, you can even move that save (including the map) to your server and play one or both. Like SloppyG said the character (and inventory) can move freely between the two, which I've seen people use for 'duping' or just to split a path in their game play for solo/co-op play. Some people are good with paying GPortal or whatever like $6-15/mo for a server, I have a beefy enough old gaming PC and it runs it all well. My PC specs if it matters: i7 2700K CPU (yes the 13 year old CPU) with 32GB RAM and SSDs for my games, I was hosting 4-6 players fine with a 200Mbps down / 50Mbps upload speeds, though recently moved to fiber and consistently have 600Mbps up and down.
I really enjoyed Valheim and having played a lot of Valheim, Enshrouded, Nightingale, and 7D2D this year they all have their pros and cons but Valheim is as good as any of them. I'll need to fire up my server soon and play some Ashlands.
A more capable drop-in replacement for minecrafters with all the building and grinding you want, but also a nobuildcost mode that lets you turn nature into your viking metropolis
I did not know this. And this would probably be the only way I would return back to it.
Because not allowing metal alloys transport through portals is 100 percent B.S.
Make no mistake, I've played enough hours and have had enough fun moments playing online co-op. Quite possibly the funniest most satisfying moment seeing my buddy devote so much time and effort and planning for us to travel to another island, and have this amazing feeling that we're accomplishing something, the heroic music as we travel through the ocean.
To the tense quiet moment in which we arrive to a new island, to the absolute horror and screaming as we get our s**t ruined 5 minutes after we set foot in a new area and barely make it 10 feet. I've never laughed harder in my life.
I kinda knew that I was done with the game at that moment, because you can't really top something like that.

The snapping is decent when you figure it out. You point at your target location piece you want to attach to, then cycle through the snapping options to get the proper position. Until I discovered this, it was a complete chore.

Fun casual game solo or with friends.
If you don't like it, refund it. If you do like it, it's an amazing value.
