Strap wrenches are great for loosening stuck plumbing nuts, oil filters and whole house big blue filters. Mark which side is loosen vs tighten to save time. These are plastic so it only works for consumer stuff.

If you need heavy duty with minimal marring go with a socket wrench compatible Lisle 60200 Heavy Duty Strap Wrench.

I have a plastic one I got like 20 years ago, still handy to this day, although the rubber strap is starting to get a little brittle.

Just used it the other day to remove a stuck sink drain (someone had glued it in there with sealant instead of plumber's putty...) when replacing a burnt out garbage disposal. This tool made it possible to do that without much trouble, and without damaging the SS sink.

I also have one that must be at least 30 to 40 years old from the prior house owner. Rubber still isn't brittle. It's great for everything around the house even as simple as a jar of pickles that won't open.

Great for pool connections, too. Like for filters. I keep mine in the freezer to preserve the rubber. Still failed after around 10 years.

I'm not sure a freezer would preserve it, it may just dry it out, since there is no moisture in freezer air (ever hear of freeze drying?). Mine still works fine, the rubber is just slightly less supple, but I chalk that up to keeping it in a hot car at times, and potentially some chemical exposures that I didn't always clean off right away.

Perhaps the pool chemicals are to blame in your case.

Either way, < $10 for a tool that will last a long time is a great deal.
