Awful price for a refurb (not so bad if new)! My recommendation has always been to go the Denon route (in this case the clone is Denon 2800) unless you really really like tiny portals and think HDAM does something for you! Also, if you're looking for that "warm Marantz sound", there are ways to modify a Denon room correction to get the same high frequency roll-off that Marantz uses for its "competitive advantage".

I wouldn't say it's an awful price, especially if the warranty is valid that's actually longer than what marantz provides.

However I agree not to purchase that one, based on the units performance. I do prefer a denon as well, but denon is getting funky outside of their high end line, at least with objectively. The 3700H was a beast. I would give it[marantz] a pass if you are only going to run 5 channels.

Marantz warranty for newer AVRs is 5 years:

In this deal, you get 1 year with Marantz and remaining 4 years with CPS. Any experience with CPS claims? I rather buy new for a bit more manufacturer warranty.

I wouldn't say another $800 is a bit more. Everywhere reputable is $1700 new.

Hence my Denon 2800 rec! Why pay more?

The Denon AVR-x2800h does not have amplifier preouts, the Marantz does. To get preouts on the Denon, you have to go the x3800h. However, I am still using my Marantz SR-5007. It has the tiny circle display in the middle. That part about it I can't stand. I like the previous model NR-1711 because of the nice display, but it is only 50 watts.

Good point on the pre-outs as that would be a valid reason to go for the Marantz over then Denon!

The big advantage to the Marantz over the x2800 is a full set of pre-outs, which you'd need to step up to the x3800 to get. Not to mention the new Cinema line is genuinely different than the SR line when it comes to internals. All to say you can't really say it's an awful price.

That being said, you could save more money and go with the Cinema 70s because it has pre-outs too. I just don't like that the Cinema 70s and 60 have a more basic Audyssey. I've become accustomed to XT 32 on my x3600 and don't think I could go back.

The 70s has a slim form factor and it definitely has its market but the amp is fairly weak, even for stereo:

57W for 2CH on 8 ohm sweep at ~77 SINAD.
85W for 2CH on 4 ohm sweep at ~75 SINAD (weird hump from 6-50W on curve).
