The cost breakdown is a $40 hard drive with a $20 sticker on it.

It does not come out and say it, but all lack of information points to a spinner drive. I'd only buy for the potential for a collectors item. Not worth it for an actual drive.

I doubt it'll be collectible, IMO it doesn't even look good. Just a low effort cash grab by printing Mando artwork on it. As a Mandalorian fan I was pretty disappointed after clicking the link.

The Seagate Beskar Ingot SSD on the other hand, now that's pretty

It is very odd how they never mention the drive type, RPM (if spinning disk), formfactor, even with a bit of googling. Best I could find was this Amazon page [amazon.com] for the same item which calls this a "2.5 Inch" and "Mechanical Hard Disk." Several Amazon reviews also say this is a mechanical drive.

If this was an SSD I'd probably buy regardless of the whole Mando thing, that would be a slight bonus.

To be fare he did say 40 dollar hard drive which isn't too far off for a 2tb drive, but yeah the enclosure price jacks up the price a bunch, especially for relatively small drives like this

theres no way you can find a reputable 2TB external for $40 though?

EDIT: i just went to newegg and went to the external hard drive section, and sorted by lowest price, and this STILL is the cheapest one.

If you wanted a 2tb external, then yes it is a great price. That's not saying anything about the brand mind you, but for the external, yeah

It seems like a fair price currently, though everyone gets so excited anytime Disney markets their Star Warts acquisition. Apparently a lot of people seem to identify with these characters, positively or negatively.

I guess you are right, prices have shot up a bit on HDDs, probably because manufacturers and buyers have moved on to SSDs.

Still, pretty minimal use cases for an external HDD in 2024, it's a mostly obsolete product. HDD is okay for an internal secondary drive or NAS drive, but if you want portability, got to go SSD for durability.

Is this something to worry about with this drive? Why?

Not that I am aware of, just being punny. I personally don't trust Seagate (past experiences) but might start considering them with some of their enterprise drives in the future. 😊
