Just so folks know, 16 Amps is pretty slow, most portable level 2 chargers can handle 32 or even 40, 32 is at least 7 KWh, double the speed of this one.

Still 2.5x faster than a level 1 charger and adds well over 100 miles of range overnight for just about any EVs but the largest. Unless you've got a very lengthy commute 16 amps at 240v is probably more than fine.

If you've got access to a 6-20 outlet this is a great option.

I don't see any practical reason WHY anyone would have 6-20 outlet though in their house.

I would think most WIDELY used 240v outlet would be dryer outlet which would be NEMA 10-30 or NEMA 14-30 outlets capable of 30A which would be 24A charge capacity which this charger does not support and also the plug this one does not come with.

You may not have the load capacity to support faster charging rates, so that may be all that you can support without up sizing your service, although load shedding can help with that.

This is a great portable charger FWIW. It's one of the few that I've found which runs at 12A on a normal outlet. That's important if you're charging at someone's house and don't know if it's a 20A or 15A circuit.

Someone who already has a 240v outlet on a 20amp circuit in their garage for tools wouldn't be unusual at all. And probably the biggest reason would be if someone already had a 5-20 outlet on a dedicated circuit it would be pretty simple to use the existing wiring and rewire it to a double breaker, switching the outlet to a 6-20.

Just curious what you use a 6-20 outlet for? I have around 20 homes and none of them have a 6-20. Want to know what I'm missing out on. Smilie

You have a 5-15/5-20 120v on a 20amp breaker with 12ga wiring ideally with just one outlet. You want to get a 240v 20amp outlet with 15 min of work. Swap the breaker and outlet.

5-20 outlet on dedicated circuit probably is going to be far less # than someone with 5-15 outlet which would be just common outlet. If one has 5-15 dedicated, it does not take too much to swap to 6-15 240v which will EASILY double the charging speed without much work as well if one has charger capable of charging 12A at 240v.

That said, I do have to agree that if one has 5-20 outlet then they already have 12 gauge wiring (assuming someone did not just swapped in the outlet + breaker on 14gauge wiring - would NOT surprise me if that was the case for someone DIYing 20A circuit) so yes, swapping to 6-20 isn't much of work.

I can only think of some high powered woodworking tools (shaper/table saw) and maybe pretty large compressors for automotive work that may use 240v 20A circuit. That said, if I was going to put a 240v outlet in my shop, I would straight go for 30A (for new wires) or 15A (re-using old 14ga wiring) for practicality reason.

Im guessing air compressors.

For my shenanigans, i got a 6-30 for the blackmax and the ultra rare 6-15 for the old sears unit.
