Sadly I wouldn't recommend this for salt. It'll wear out the reel and rust the rod.

For fresh, this is a solid beginner combo.

Shipping hurts though. Reel is $25 at Walmart currently. https://www.walmart.com/ip/182789069

Ordered one. Don't know why this isn't getting any love when all the Walmart ones do.

The walmart penn pursuit combo was way better quality compared to this.

Can this rod handle kayak fishing in the ocean for rockfish and lingcod?

Need advise. Going on vacation next month to Outer Banks NC. Renting a house on the Currituck Sound. I want to puchase a couple of rods so the kids can try fishing. I haven't fished since I was a teenager and have no clue about what equipment to get. Will this work well or should I look at something else? Trying not to break the bank, in case the kids aren't into it. Thanks in advance!

This is pretty much a freshwater rod that might be okay off of a dock or in protected waters, but you'll want something larger and longer for fishing in the surf off of a beach. Surf rods are usually 7-10 feet in length with a 5000 (sometimes called a 500 or 50) size reel or larger. And, any freshwater gear should be rinsed with fresh water after being used in saltwater.

I took a cruise through the Walmart website looking for saltwater rod/reel combos and found this: Shakespeare Continuum 7'6" Spinning Fishing Rod and Reel Combo @ $28.32. [walmart.com] That's a very slick deal, IMHO, and what seals it is that the combo comes with the Okuma Avenger Baitfeeder 6BB+1RB Fishing Reel. I've have a smaller version of this reel and love it, super smooth with the 7 total bearings. At that price I'm tempted to buy a few myself.

Have fun fishing with your kids. Ask some locals or the employees at the local bait shop what kind of rig and bait to use. Most folks who fish love to share their knowledge with new fishermen. Hopefully, your kids will love fishing and spending time together.

EDIT: Ah, poop! Just found this review on the combo I suggested: "Reel is not what's advertised, Decent combo, the rod is correct but but the reel is NOT described in the description of the product, different brand and not 6BB+1 as advertised."

That absolutely kills the deal, IMHO, because that Okuma reel in the description is a GREAT reel. And there aren't any decent photos of the reel to confirm which one it is. I can tell the reel is a dull black, and none of my Okuma reels look like that, so the review is probably accurate. Darn it, Walmart! It might still be a decent combo at that price, as the reviews are fairly good, but it's not the very slick deal I thought it was. At $28 I might still bite for your kids. Sorry for the confusion.

EDIT2: According to this review the reel is actually... "Not an okuma avenger 7 bb reel, it is a Shakespeare 2 ball bearing branded reel. Delivery was fast and rods came intact. no breaks." Not terrible for this money, but definitely a cheaper reel, which explains the low price. I still think this combo would be a good, inexpensive combo for your kids.

What might you recommend for lake fishing from the shore? I have the cheapy combos and stuff now that works but I'd like something nicer that helps me cast out little 1/4oz spinners much further.

I was looking at the abu garcia veritas set on SD for 125 6'6" maybe? I'm just looking for panfish, perch, and maybe a bass or trout all lake stuff.

Wow, great info! Thank you! Currituck Sound is almost entirely fresh water (less than 5% salinity levels), since the inlets have been closed. So corrosion shouldn't be a problem. We'll have a dock to fish off of as well as some kayaks we'll be renting. I'll check out your recommendations regardless!
