4.1 out of 5 star rating on Amazon where it's currently $52.32. [amazon.com] Most of the negative reviews are related to poor packing and/or a broken rod during shipping, which really isn't fair to judge the product negatively for. This would make a nice, inexpensive rod for trout, bass, panfish and other light to mid-sized freshwater species. I don't own this particular model, but Lew's has a reputation for making good gear. Happy fishing! Pro tip: take a kid for maximum enjoyment!

Order two for the free shipping and take a kid fishing. 😀
Sadly I wouldn't recommend this for salt. It'll wear out the reel and rust the rod.

For fresh, this is a solid beginner combo.

Shipping hurts though. Reel is $25 at Walmart currently. https://www.walmart.com/ip/182789069

This is pretty much a freshwater rod that might be okay off of a dock or in protected waters, but you'll want something larger and longer for fishing in the surf off of a beach. Surf rods are usually 7-10 feet in length with a 5000 (sometimes called a 500 or 50) size reel or larger. And, any freshwater gear should be rinsed with fresh water after being used in saltwater.
What might you recommend for lake fishing from the shore? I have the cheapy combos and stuff now that works but I'd like something nicer that helps me cast out little 1/4oz spinners much further.

I was looking at the abu garcia veritas set on SD for 125 6'6" maybe? I'm just looking for panfish, perch, and maybe a bass or trout all lake stuff.

I took a cruise through the Walmart website looking for saltwater rod/reel combos and found this: Shakespeare Continuum 7'6" Spinning Fishing Rod and Reel Combo @ $28.32. [walmart.com] That's a very slick deal, IMHO, and what seals it is that the combo comes with the Okuma Avenger Baitfeeder 6BB+1RB Fishing Reel. I've have a smaller version of this reel and love it, super smooth with the 7 total bearings. At that price I'm tempted to buy a few myself.

Have fun fishing with your kids. Ask some locals or the employees at the local bait shop what kind of rig and bait to use. Most folks who fish love to share their knowledge with new fishermen. Hopefully, your kids will love fishing and spending time together.

EDIT: Ah, poop! Just found this review on the combo I suggested: "Reel is not what's advertised, Decent combo, the rod is correct but but the reel is NOT described in the description of the product, different brand and not 6BB+1 as advertised."

That absolutely kills the deal, IMHO, because that Okuma reel in the description is a GREAT reel. And there aren't any decent photos of the reel to confirm which one it is. I can tell the reel is a dull black, and none of my Okuma reels look like that, so the review is probably accurate. Darn it, Walmart! It might still be a decent combo at that price, as the reviews are fairly good, but it's not the very slick deal I thought it was. At $28 I might still bite for your kids. Sorry for the confusion.

EDIT2: According to this review the reel is actually... "Not an okuma avenger 7 bb reel, it is a Shakespeare 2 ball bearing branded reel. Delivery was fast and rods came intact. no breaks." Not terrible for this money, but definitely a cheaper reel, which explains the low price. I still think this combo would be a good, inexpensive combo for your kids.
Wow, great info! Thank you! Currituck Sound is almost entirely fresh water (less than 5% salinity levels), since the inlets have been closed. So corrosion shouldn't be a problem. We'll have a dock to fish off of as well as some kayaks we'll be renting. I'll check out your recommendations regardless!

I like the camo. The fish won't see me so I could stalk even closer. I could throw a rock further out in the water and they would move toward me because they wouldn't see me and think that's it's safe closer to shore and when they arrive they will be happy to see a worm waiting for them.

Hey! awesome breakdown, thanks! I may still buy it even with the less than ideal reel.
Any recommendation for a surfcasting rod/reel for a similar price point - can be a little more, thanks!

i love lew's rods -- their reels are pretty good also, but at least for bass fishing i'll never go shorter than the 6'10" (lew's actually come to think of it) baitcasting rod i own.
The 6'6" i once had seemed like a kids rod in length.
i think a 6-foot flat would feel like a billiards cue to me.

Hi All! Need some suggestions! I am completely new to fishing. I want to buy something which is helpful for beginners like me to learn and also not very cheap quality and not too expensive. 😂 Is this the right choice for me?

I picked this up. I'm actually surprised by the quality. It'll get you into fishing. Just do it! All the time you're wasting here trying to let people talk you in or out of it you could be spending fishing😉

I ordered two (one for me and one for my son) to get the free shipping and they are pretty good quality for the price.

I actually bought this combo instore last week. Mainly for my 8yr old son as a starter spinning rod/reel as his spincast is "for babies". He loves it. Rod is rated down to 1/8th oz for lures. I slapped some 10lb braid on it with a mono leader that I had laying around. While it is a shorter rod, it cast out the 1/8th oz jigs great. I'd rather have a lighter rod for trout but this works just fine. Quality is great for $30
